A woman has dreams that she will become a doctor. Then World War II takes her towards an astonishing love as well as a fateful choice. Could it be that falling in love is possible at the edge of life?

Lena has lived in Wales on her farm for a long time, living a long and quiet life alongside her husband and their child. But when the end approaches for her, memories that have long been buried start to come back that deal with her childhood in Poland as well as the passion that she has for science. The early days of her marriage saw her married to an army officer. When her daughter was born, that ended up changing everything.

Memories that have not been as welcome end up coming back as well. The Polish village has been changed overnight by the Soviets. The war that ended up dooming all of her family to the work camps of the Siberian tundra comes back to her. Buried in the snow among the darkness of survival, the most haunting memory of all of them comes back– that of a new love.

Looking into themes such as consequences, marriage, motherhood, and the human capacity for hope, this is the tale of a woman who has the courage to love and to dream, even when dealing with impossible odds. It also contends with the peace that we have to make when it comes to our choices, which can be made long after the years have gone by. Read this book to read every word that Paula has to say and to check out one of the great new voices in the fiction world!
