Main character Sonny Magee has spent the majority of her life living on her own. She’s been able to find comfort in being quiet and in solitude, writing things down in her notebook privately. She was just a child when she lost her mother, who had her troubles but still loved her. Sonny was raised by a grandmother who was indifferent and oftentimes cruel who would leave her with scars but also ignorant and naive when it comes to life.

When Sonny finds herself with a large amount of money, she also discovers that she has ended up in Arizona at the luxury Sanctuary Resort & Spa. She’s completely out of her element and her comfort zone, and has trouble with the doting staff at the spa as well as the wealth that she is not used to at all and the small talk that is always going on with the other guests.

Being in forced proximity means that she is introduced to a group of eccentric people. But something close to romance starts blossoming between her and a resort employee. Sonny feels at the highest level of peace when she is on the side people watching with her headphones on, scribbling in her notebook.

When a strange accident breaks up the Sanctuary’s peacefulness, a surprising twist may end up deeply affecting Sonny’s inner world. She finds herself unexpectedly and pleasantly surprised by all the people who are around her. What will happen and will Sonny discover that there is more community around her than she thought?
