Main character Tony Ward has decided to come back to Lucan. He’s got his chest puffed up and he’s come back with a definite chip on his shoulder that he’s carrying. He had been in the UK for five years and had managed to stay out of trouble like he had been instructed. Now he’s come back to the west Dublin estate and feels that he is ready to come back into the fold of the gangland scene.
The only thing that he did not anticipate was that things had changed. His former mentor has passed and Kenny Boyle, his former best pal, has decided that he’s going to leave that world and go on the straight and narrow. It all isn’t working out. But Tony gets the chance to work for Darren ‘Flute’ Walsh, working for the enforcer of the crime boss Aengus Lavelle directly.
The opportunity seems like it is simply too good to miss out on. Flute is someone that Tony knew when they were boys in school, but those days have long gone. Becoming his left hand man gives a level of security against the various repercussions for crimes that had led to him needing to go on the run, and it provides him a way into the life that he wants. Lavelle does end up making it clear that trouble from the past is going to have to be dealt with by Tony alone.
Tony has been hurt by the promises of a mentor before and wants to show that he is his own man. Despite this there is a pull coming to him from Flute Walsh, the type that he has contended with previously. The pieces of his life are behind him and there are more threats to deal with than ever. He’s allowing himself to be pulled in.
Tony ends up turning away from the structures that support him as he searches for something more stable in new surroundings that are tougher than ever. Is there a place for him to have love in this type of world, where it seems as though retribution is never that far and always waiting to strike? Read All Them Dogs by Djamel White to find out!
