Tomás Q. Morin is a published author and poet.

He is known for writing the poem collection Machete as well as his memoir Let Me Count the Ways. He has also written another memoir, titled Where Are You From: Letters to My Son. Let Me Count the Ways received the Nonfiction Book Award from The Writer’s League of Texas.

Morin has also written poetry collections titled Patient Zero and A Larger Country, which received the APR/Honickman Book Prize. He has also written Cat Love, a book from Pantheon. He is also working on a poetry collection titled My Favourite Things.

Morin also serves as a co-editor of the anthology Coming Close: Forty Essays on Philip Levine, which he co-edits with Mari L’Esperance. He also translated Pablo Neruda’s The Heights of Macchu Picchu. He has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, and the Guggenheim Foundation.

Morin is an instructor at Rice University and the Vermont College of Fine Art.

Let Me Count the Ways: A Memoir is a 2022 work by Tomás Q. Morin. Cat Love is a 2026 book by Tomás Q. Morin. This is the latest from this author, a contemporary dystopian elegy that has a narrator who is none other than a cat trapped in a Schrödinger’s box. The Free-Lance Star commented that the writing of this author inside this story ‘cuts to the core with electrifying force’.

That’s right, a cat is the heroine of this story. Inside Cat Love, she is able to recall her life living with her beloved owner, who she calls ‘the Mustache’. When she is trapped inside of a one way mirrored box that is shown in a classroom for people who have to ponder her fate through their training to become emotional support humans, she reminisces on the various music, poetry, and creature comforts that she shared with her owner, some of the best parts of a society that has become inundated with intolerance and violence.

The trainees inside of this room get the assignment to consider what they feel about her. The students also have their doubts about whether there really is a cat inside of the box or if they are just being told there is one and being manipulated that way.

The quizzes that they take daily shown in each chapter are as smart as the narrator while also being poignant. At the same time, the mystery of how she was cat-napped is revealed and the reader is shown the next move she might take on a plane that is more spectral in nature.

This is a completely original read that considers powerful themes and is about living beings. It evokes strong feelings in the reader as it shows us a view of ourselves– but this time from the other side of the mirror.
