In the modern world, Travis is Death. He has a basic outfit where he wears jeans and a T-shirt. He resides in a small town that is mostly gray. He has a job to do, and that is offering people comfort when it comes to their last hours of life.
Travis is gentle and stoic and perhaps a little naive even though he knows some things. Despite his identity, he is handsome and young. Every death that he sees has meaning to him. He likes to listen and doesn’t judge and more important than all of that is the fact that he does not try to change anyone’s fate. He understands that every life is going to have to come to a close in order to keep the balance of the universe steady. He is able to respect the cycle.
He then ends up meeting Dalia, who is a midwife. She also has a daughter named Layla who is eight years old and lives across the hall. As Dalia and Layla start to embrace Travis, it becomes more difficult than ever to try and keep the detachment up that has let him function for such a long time. The time that they spend together is able to teach him just what is important in life and what might be lost forever when it comes to death.
Written with wisdom, warmth, and compassion, this story is timeless. It’s all about being able to appreciate life, to accept the end of it, and to find the place that we have in the universe, even when it seems difficult. It might end up really resonating with you if you have ever lost something or really cared about something and gone through losing it. Read this book by Ben Reeves to absorb every beautiful word!
