The place is Florida and the year is 1935. In Heron Key, you can often see that relationships can get really tangled up, sometimes becoming as twisted up as the mangrove roots in the swamp. It’s been 18 years since Henry went to war, but Missy has waited.

She has kept busy by cleaning the Kincaids’ house and counting stars. Now he has returned at last but she doesn’t really recognize the person that he is. He’s a veteran but he has also turned desperate and destitute. He seems like he doesn’t know what to expect from the future but he also has a lot of shame about his past.

It’s hurricane season, and tens of thousands of white and black men have come home scarred by war in Europe and finding themselves abandoned to being poor thanks to the United States government. The small and segregated community has also been overwhelmed by men who have been broken by war and have new ideas about racial equality.

Then a woman is found beaten close to death sometime after the 4th of July barbecue. The suspicion falls upon Henry and he gets accused of the crime, which causes tensions to go up. As the tensions continue to increase, the barometer starts to go down– a sure sign that a huge hurricane is headed their way.

This book is based on real events that happened in history and shows what can happen when people are pushed to their limit. Meanwhile, the strongest hurricane ever to hit America is on its way. Then the year is 1919. Alicia Cortez is someone who is mixed race who has come to Key West exiled in disgrace from her family, who live in Havana. There is also John Morales, a war hero with baggage and issues. He’s come back on the last United States troop ship from Europe.

Love has brought them closer even in a time of racial segregation, and as a side effect, people are watching them.
