Main character Sir Henry appears to just be your average wealthy gentleman, but it turns out that he is actually a secret agent working for the crown. However, not everything has gone according to plan. He has an illegitimate daughter and he’s going to have to get married to a fine lady if he wants to be able to afford to make his daughter’s entrance into society.
He nearly gets married to a highborn lady, but is fortunate to dodge a bullet after he finds out that she is a bigot. He decides to take on an assignment in Brighton that takes him to an abandoned abbey that is full of whispers and a secret society that he has actually been looking into for the past three years.
Isabella has always been talented and beautiful. She has always had her own designs for her life, which never included falling in love. The only thing that she wants to do is to be able to paint and look to the future and leave her painful past where it is. She also would love to keep some distance between herself and her overbearing mother.
Getting independence is not going to be the easiest thing, particularly for a woman who is living in 1823. To remedy this, Isabella is going to have to move strategically. She starts up a fake courtship involving Sir Henry, but is startled at how much she enjoys it. She may be able to pursue a career in painting and fall in love.
Isabella is also scared of a man and she’s right to be afraid as he ends up kidnapping her. Sir Henry doesn’t know what to do and it seems that all hope is lost. Henry starts to realize that the abductor belongs to the organization he’s investigating and it all comes together, with Sir Henry giving chase.
As he gets pulled further into a web of secrets, they’re going to have to take on old foes and do their best to try and find their own happy ending. Is it possible or simply too far out of reach? Read the second book in Bianca M. Schwarz’s series to find out!
