Lee Gramling is an American published author.

He is a sixth-generation Floridian who resides in Gainesville. He admired the late Louis L’Amour and has been inspired by the stories of the Florida frontier that he heard from his parents and grandparents growing up.

It was while he was residing in the state of Oklahoma that he first got acquainted with the novels of Louis L’Amour. It was then that he started to realize that old Florida had the elements that were featured in Western action and adventure stories– Indian wars, cattle drives, boom towns, outlaws, salon shootouts, and rugged individualists who used their keen instincts to survive in a frontier that was otherwise untamed.

Up to this point, not many writers had summoned inspiration from this environment and Gramling thought that it was time for someone to make up for all that slack. He created Cracker Westerns, series that are full of bad guys, good guys, women who are strong and rely on themselves, and authentic historical detail. All of the action goes down in the times of early Florida, which the author relays as being a place even wilder than the west was.

Gramling says that the word cracker goes back over five hundred years and has been referring to a cultural/ethnic group that he belongs to. He states that at some point in the past fifty or sixty years it became co-opted to be used as a racial slur against white people. However, he uses it in the original sense and refuses ‘to recognize its employment as a tool of bigotry and racism’, as he details on his home site.

His cracker Westerns are the type of active tales that are full of action that are placed in Florida’s frontier days. They are full of heroes, adventure, and the types of details that are able to bring the rich history of Florida to life. If you’re looking for a fast paced story that is really entertaining set in the old times of Florida, the Cracker Western series is right up your alley.

Riders of the Suwannee is the first book in the Cracker Western series by Lee Gramling. This series features the main character of Tate Barkley, who has come back to Florida in the 1870’s after spending a decade on the Western frontier.

He’s the type of guy that trouble seems to find with a mind of his own, and it’s become such a part of his life that by now he has gotten used to it. Big Bill Caton and his three dozen renegades are a lot more trouble than Tate would have first accounted for. Before he ran into the Caton bunch, he had kind of thought about moving to settle down in the Florida Panhandle, the same place that he grew up.

That’s what he thought that he wanted to do, but looking at it more perhaps it would have been a better idea to just ride past. But when he meets Eileen McClanahan, it seems like he suddenly might have a reason to stay. She’s a widower with some kids who is trying to maintain her Gulf coast place. She’s also uniquely her own person.

Eileen has a temper as well as a stubborn streak and she’s not going to back down from Big Bill or anyone else. Tate is a tough guy himself but when he sees her tangling with Big Bill Caton and more, he can’t let her deal with them on her own. It’s just not the type of gentleman that he is, especially when he knows what these guys are capable of.

He is a fighter naturally and also by trade, and so when she starts up a fight, he figures that he should see it through right to the end. He wants to see whose finish it really is and that’s something that Tate doesn’t want to think about at the moment.

Can he stick around with Eileen or is he about to find out that she just generates too much trouble for him to deal with? Is she going to get herself or both of them in some hot water before too long? Or is she just the type of lady that he was looking for? Read this book from Lee Gramling to find out!

Trail from St. Augustine is the second book in the Cracker Western series by Lee Gramling. If you liked the first book full of adventure set in the state of Florida, then you might really like this fun filled sequel.

It is the spring of 1771 and John MacKenzie has come to St. Augustine which is overseen by the British after going fur trapping for a year. He’s gotten used to the peacefulness of the outside world in nature and didn’t think that he would get pulled into some new situation so quickly.

He gets involved in an adventure that means taking on a young woman and defending her. The young woman is indentured to James Tyrone. Becky and MacKenzie Campbell depart across the Florida wilderness which is utterly untamed and are joined by a sailor named Blackpool Bobby as well as Jeremiah, a black slave hunter.

They make their way towards the buried gold and as they do, Tyrone’s trackers take after them. The result is a showdown on the sands of the Florida Gulf Coast that none of them will forget anytime soon. Check out this book by Lee Gramling to find out what happens and see what you think!
