Katie Siegel is a published author who goes by she/they pronouns. She is a former child detective who came to realize that writing mysteries was a lot more fun than attempting to solve them and failing.

When she is not busy writing books she is either busy reading, listening to comedy podcasts, or playing TTRPGs along with her friends. She lives in central New Jersey, which is a real place.

Katie’s debut novel is called Charlotte Illes Is Not A Detective and it came out in 2023 from Kensington Books. Her second book was a sequel to this and is titled Charlotte Illes Is Not a Teacher. It came out in 2024 and was a finalist for the 2025 Lambda Literary Award for LGBTQ+ Mystery. She narrated the audiobooks for these books as well. Siegel followed those up with more books, including Out of the Loop and the upcoming One for the Books, a fantasy story.

In addition to writing, Katie likes to make sketch comedy/narrative fiction videos for her followers on Instagram and YouTube. She produces Tales from Grevelon, a TTRPG podcast that is set in Grevelon, a magical world that she first came up with for her scripted radio show podcast ‘Dear Liisphyra’. She loves acting and writing for television, live action, film and animated projects.

She loves to make stuff but when she is not busy with that she can usually be discovered trying to hit her yearly reading goal, trying to get her money’s worth from her Dropout subscription listening to podcasts, or playing TTRPGs with friends.

Katie attended Rutgers University and she graduated with her degree in journalism. Today, she resides in the state of New Jersey and continues to write.

Charlotte Illes Is Not A Detective is the first book in the Not a Detective series by Katie Siegel. If you ever grew up and you wanted to be a detective, this series might be the one for you. It puts a millennial spin on the genre of cozy mystery, featuring a heroine and former child detective who is now someone in their twenties who is without direction until another mystery comes along.

Being a famous child detective is fun, but one of the downsides is that it is only a matter of time before you grow up. Charlotte had incredible sleuthing abilities when she was a child, to the point that she actually became something of a local celebrity.

However, in high school, she would hang up her detective’s hat and put away the blue landline in her office, also known as her garage. She was convinced that her purpose as an adult in life would be as simple as looking for missing pudding cups or finding stolen gems.

Now she is 25 years old and Charlotte has a huge fear that she actually did peak when she was younger and will never top where she got to in middle school. She resides with her mother, looking through job listings in the hopes of finding something to do, and her love life revolves around first dates that typically don’t get a followup.

The best part is that when it comes to understanding what she ought to do next, Charlotte has no idea. When her old phone rings, it seems like a chance to get back into the world of solving mysteries that she used to be so familiar with and take another crack at it just one more time.

The only problem is that the world as an adult is a lot more complicated than she thought. When she was younger, she was able to take the case on, solve it, and still be able to tackle her homework and get all of it done in a timely fashion.

These days, the game has changed. Now she is contending with some serious stuff, including dead bodies, people who have gone missing, and villains who see her as a real threat. The detective skills that she thought she never wanted to use again are the only things that are able to stop a killer who wants to make sure that she retires for good.

Can Charlotte figure out what to do in time or will she discover that getting back into the sleuthing game was a huge mistake? Read the first book in this series to find out.

Charlotte Illes Is Not A Teacher is the second book in the Not a Detective series by Katie Siegel. Get back into all of the adventure and fun with a brand new sequel in this series featuring everyone’s favorite former child detective Charlotte Illes.

Charlotte is experiencing a strong case of deja vu when she finds herself returning to Frencham Middle School. But this time she is no longer a student but a substitute teacher who has a side gig doing detective work. It isn’t too long, however, before another mystery comes knocking at her door.

When you talk about going back to the scene of a crime, most people don’t conjure up the idea of a middle school in their head. That is where Lottie Illes, the kid detective, was able to go through some of her greatest successes– and where she solved mysteries and won acclaim. Of course, that was all before the world of being an adult and managing adult responsibilities ended up crashing down all around her.

Charlotte is now twenty-something years old and she has come back to the classroom as a sub. Despite the ways that she has tried to get away from the shadow of her younger self, there are others out there who have not forgotten her. A fellow teacher is hoping to find help when it comes to finding the person behind all of the threats that are being sent to her as well as her aunt, who is running to be re-elected to the Board of Education.

Charlotte thinks that the messages that she is getting must be a prank at first, but it soon becomes clear that the threats are escalating. She’s now an adult and has to solve these mysteries. Can she do it before it is too late? Read the second book in the Katie Siegel’s series to find out what happens.
