Suji Kim is a published author and a bestseller. She is largely known to readers for her Under the Oak Tree series.
The novel won a Romance Webnovel Award from RIDI, a South Korean e-book platform. Its webcomic adaptation was very popular with readers and the published adapted series is now available for everyone to enjoy.
Kim has also published other works, such as There Is a Mouse in My House and Twilight Poem.
Suji began writing when she was younger, starting to take on the craft when she was in middle school at about thirteen years old. She began Under the Oak Tree in college, something that was sparked by her roommates finding out about her interest in writing and encouraged her to come up with a story. This would be an early version of the Oak Tree series. When Kim found it years later, she decided to revise her first draft after deciding that the plot was interesting enough to elaborate on.
The author has spoken about different influences when it comes to writing this story. The title of the story and the reference material for picking names and world building came from the Old Testament. The title of the story is meant to be symbolic and for the reader to interpret, as well as representing the legend in the story and the relationship that Maximilian and Riftan have with each other.
Suji came up with the concept of Maximilian having a stutter due to a friendly joke about the way that she stutters when excited or flustered. She was reflecting on the challenges that a speech impediment can have for a person, something that inspired her to incorporate this into Maximilian’s character, which would allow her to show how she works at overcoming her own difficulties.
Suji has also come out with a new series called The Forgotten Field that is being published and adapted as a webcomic on this platform. While the story is placed within the same fictional world as Under the Oak Tree, it all takes place during an earlier period of time. The story is ongoing and the webnovel and webcomic will be available in Korean without any official translations being published at the start, which could change. The author also intends to come up with more related works that are set inside of this world.
Kim enjoys watching animal videos, relaxing, listening to the radio for fun, and different genres of music that can help inspire her writing. Some of her hobbies include reading, cooking, and spending time on the Internet. To reduce her own stress, she tries to listen to hybrid rock music and does her best to find ways that she can laugh through watching comedic shows or sitcoms.
Suji was first inspired to begin writing when she saw that one of her friends in middle school was writing fantasy novels on a regular basis. She wrote some and showed it to him, and they serialized a novel online together, after which Suji started writing seriously. She frequently curates music and listens to it to inspire the feeling of the scene that she is writing, and enjoys creating a synopsis for each story idea as a type of tool to help her while writing.
Suji still finds it difficult to believe that her writing is popular all over the world but is very appreciative that it is, hoping that she can keep her writing career going for many years. She is grateful for all of the support for her writing she has received throughout the years.
