Jim Shockey is a Canadian author as well as a wildlife photographer, videographer, naturalist, worldwide adventurer, wilderness outfitter and guide, television producer, and host. He is also a member of The Explorers Club.

Born in 1957 in Saskatoon, he is an expert when it comes to folk and tribal art. Shockey is also known for founding the Hand of Man Museum in British Columbia, a place where he was able to store his collections as he is an active collector of tribal and ethnocentric folk art forms.

The author owns some exclusive outfitting territories in the wild lands of Canada, such as the Pacific Rim Guide Territory on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. He also owns the 12,000 square mile Rogue River Outfitting in the Yukon Territory.

He has also participated in television productions that have won him 15 Golden Moose Awards over the course of eight years. Jim is also an accomplished archer, muzzle loader, and rifle holder. He is a retired Honorary Lieutenant Colonel of the 4 Canadian Ranger Patrol Group Canadian Armed Forces. He is also a Member International of the Explorer’s Club in NYC and works in production along with his family.

He attended Simon Fraser University and Carleton University, where he was an all-American swimmer and part of the Canadian National Water polo team (where he went to 2 World Championships). He is an expert on Western Canada’s ethnographic arts and opened the Hand of Man Museum of Cultural Arts and Conservation in 2019. Since then, tens of thousands have people have visited this museum that is funded wholly by voluntary donations.

He is the former producer and host of Jim Shockey’s Hunting Adventures and Jim Shockey’s Uncharted on Outdoor Channel, as well as Jim Shockey’s The Professionals on Outdoor Channel and Sportsman Channel and Jim Shockey’s Shock Therapy and Jim Shockey’s Rogue River Men. His daughter Eva was co-host on Hunting Adventures. He has also produced television programs such as the APTN shows Yukon Harvest and Coastal Carvings. He has hunted on over six different continents and fifty different countries.

He has served as a member of the Pro Staff or a brand ambassador for a variety of brands that include Leupold Optics, Stealth Cam, Nosler, Crosman/Benjamin, Christensen Arms, and Yeti Coolers. Shockey has been a partner of Bowtech Archery and in 2016 became a co-founding partner of BookYourHunt.com.

Shockey also won an award at the Sportsman Channel’s Sportsman Choice Awards of 2014. In 2016, the Outdoor Channel and the Sportsman Channel came together to host the Outdoor Sportsman Awards ceremony. He would win the Outdoor Sportsman Awards himself in 2017 for Best Overall TV Series. In 2018, he was given two Fan Favorite awards for Uncharted: Best Big Game Hunting Series and Best Education/Entertainment Series. He was given an award for Best Sound Design for Hunting Adventures and Fan Favorite Best Big Game Hunting Series for Uncharted in 2019.

Outdoor Life magazine has said that he is ‘the most accomplished big-game hunter of the modern era’ and ‘the most influential celebrity in big-game hunting’.

He would get married to his wife Louise in 1984. They are the parents to their two children, Branlin and Eva. They have grandchildren and some of them have participated in hunting and with Jim’s efforts in the entertainment business. Sadly, Louise Shockey would pass away on September 21, 2023 after battling cancer for two years.

Shockey has received an incredible amount of recognition and awards over the years. He has received the Fourth Pinnacle of Achievement Award, the Zenith Award, the Crowning Achievement Award, the Professional Hunter Award, the C.J. McElroy Award, the World Hunting Award, the International Hunter of the Year Award, the World Conservation & Hunting Award, The Pantheon Award, The SCI Family Legacy Award, The Conklin Award (from the Conklin Foundation, recognizing the world’s greatest active hunter), The Ovis Award, and the Weatherby Hunting and Conservation Award in 2018.
