A magician who turns to detective work in pre-war London may just surprise himself when he ends up taking on three impossible crimes and solving them. When celebrity psychiatrist Anselm Rees is found dead in a locked study in 1930s London, there appears to be no possible way that the killer could have escaped without anyone seeing them.

There aren’t any clues, witnesses, or evidence of the murder weapon to be seen. The Scotland Yard detective on the case can’t draw any conclusions from this scene and calls Joseph Spector to help out. The former stage musician and now part time sleuth is the best candidate that they have in trying to figure out something impossible. He’s the perfect person to deal with this since he is used to dealing in illusions.

Spector is able to find out the reason behind things that are not easily explained most of the time, but when he comes up against this mystery, he immediately knows that there is going to be a lot to this case than what first meets the eye. He and the Inspector take on a variety of suspects that were either patients of the psychiatrist or part of his life.

As they do, they start to find out that there are many secrets that are being kept among them, and many of the suspects possessed a motive for murder. When the investigation leads to an impossible theft, the detectives have to look at the chance that the two are related. Then a second murder goes down in an elevator that is supposed to be impenetrable.

Soon the detectives are forced to realize that this is just going to keep going until someone stops it. They are running out of time to catch the killer and keep them from striking again, but can they manage it? Will they be able to find the person responsible in time or is this the start of a brutal crime wave that is about to grip the city like nothing ever has before? Read the first book in this mystery series to find out!

In the city of London in the year 1938, Edmund Ibbs is a young lawyer who is desperately trying to track down any small bit of evidence that might prove that his client is innocent. Anything would help when it comes to showing that Carla Dean was not the person who shot her husband dead, at the top of a Ferris Wheel of all places.

The more that Edmund looks into things, the more complicated everything becomes. As the case gets more complex, the idealistic lawyer finds himself pulled further into a web of murder and conspiracy unlike anything he has ever seen before.

Even worse, it is not too much longer before he discovers that he himself is being suspected of pulling off two different crimes that should be impossible. He knows that he didn’t do it, but it’s a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

When a corpse appears from nowhere during a performance by Professor Paolini the illusionist at the Pomegranate Theatre, it’s not just part of the act. It is followed by a second victim who gets shot dead in a locked dressing room that is located in one of the backstage corridors.

Edmund being in the vicinity is a large part of why he is being suspected by George Flint, the Scotland Yard inspector. But things are about to have a shot at improving when Joseph Spector gets involved. The former conjuror is now a detective who has his own logical perspective that may be able to see something that the others aren’t.

In this world full of misdirection and illusion, Joseph Spector may be the young lawyer’s best chance at proving he is innocent. Can they catch a killer and put all of this to rest?
