The Book of Difficult Fruit: Arguments for the Tart, Tender, and Unruly (with recipes) is a 2021 nonfiction collection by Kate Lebo. Not enough to convince you even though your mouth is already watering? It was the winner of the Washington State Book Award and was also named a Best Book of the Year by NPR, New York magazine, and The Atlantic.
Kate Lebo knows poems, essays, and pies, and she brings the full height of her powers to bear here in a fascinating book that might even inspire you to take on some new recipes and ingredients. This is a book that Samin Nosrat of The New York Times Magazine described as simply being ‘Dazzling’. Open up the pages of this book that is inspired by 26 different fruits to see Kate combine her own personal insight along with information that is culinary, natural, and medical.
Inside of The Book of Difficult Fruit, readers will find such unique fruits as aronia, a berry that belongs to the apple family and a super-fruit that is said to have the ability to help people heal. Other fruits featured include medlar(mentioned by Shakespeare for its unique if crude shape), durian (known for its strong odor), and quince (smells like roses/citrus/perfume when fresh but is astringent when eaten raw).
Compiled inside of this original work, these fruits and more are the main ingredients of 26 different lyrical essays that also come along with recipes. Along the way, Lebo makes sure to explore questions such as what it is that truly makes a fruit difficult and offers up some answers.
Perhaps what makes a fruit difficult is its harvest or its cultivation, or the way that it has to be prepared in order to eat it. It could be how briefly it is available to eat in terms of the moment that it becomes ripe, or the way that it quickly becomes rotted or inedible. It might take over your garden or just simply look a little more ugly than the conventional fruits that you are used to seeing at the grocery store.
Fruit can be a vehicle by way to explore different relationships, the way that we take care of ourselves, the way we take care of the land, history both botanical and medical, and more. This is a unique adventure through food and the mind of the author that food and nonfiction fans will not want to pass up. Check out The Book of Difficult Fruit, a work that may quickly become one of your favorites.
