Alison Weir is a well known British author and historian who has written many historical novels. Most of her novels are in the form of history books and historical depictions, revolving around the biographies of British royalty. Alison was born in July 8, 1951 in London, England. She started her writing career in the year 1989 when her first novel was published, which was about the centered around the genealogical description of the British royal family. Subsequently, Alison went on to write the biographies of a number of British princes, queens, princesses and kings. Her written works are typically based on the history, literature and fiction genres. As a child, Alison grew up in Central London and was deeply inspired by her mother, whom she has described as a genuine and a good person with lots of strength, humor, integrity and wisdom. She has seen her other overcoming the trials of her life with a commendable fortitude. At the age of 14, Alison developed a keen interest in the field of history and began reading a historical book about Catherine of Aragon. She completed her academic education from the School for Girls in City of London and later from the North Western Polytechnic.

Alison hoped of becoming a teacher and eventually opted to abandon a career in history after getting disillusioned with a program based on trendy teaching methods. Later, she got married to Rankin Weir in the year 1972 and gave birth to a couple of sons named John and Kate, who were born in the years 1982 and 1984 respectively. After her marriage, Alison began to work as a civil servant and then as a housewife after the birth of her children. She also ran a school for the children with disabilities in learning between the years 1991 and 1997. , Alison says that one of her characters named Mrs Ellen from her novel on Jane Grey, looks mostly like her own personality. She has even said in her interviews that when she was working on developing the character of Mrs Ellen, she ended up projecting her maternal side into her character. Author Alison Weir cares very much about the historical sites of prime importance present in the country and believes that it would extremely tragic if they are lost forever. With this belief, she supports the renovation work of the Northampton Castle. For their work related to the lobbying for the excavation of the castle and regenerating the area, she applauded the Friends of Northampton Castle and urged all the citizens of the country to support them in their venture.

One of the initial novels written by author Alison Weir is ‘The Princes in the Tower’, which was published by the Ballantine Books publishing house in the year 1992. The plot of the novel is set in London, England, The United Kingdom, and it revolves around the lives of the main characters Richard III and Edward V of England, 1st Duke of York and Richard of Shrewsbury. The opening sequence of the plot of the novel deals with the mysteries surrounding the deaths of King Edward V and his brother Richard. More than five centuries have passed, but the investigation by a number of historians have not been able to solve the mysteries of the their sinister deaths. The deaths of the boy king and the duke still remain two of the most intriguing and fascinating murder mysteries in the history of England. The common belief among the people at that time was that king Richard III had killed the Princes in the Tower, however the novel as some very interesting questions that make readers doubt whether he was the real murderer or there was someone else entirely, who killed the Princes for his benefit. Through this novel, author Alison tries to examine carefully every shred of evidence and clues as well as the numerous modern accounts. By doing so, she has tried to reconstruct the chain of events as they had happened, leading to the murder of the Princes. She has attempted to make the readers become aware of the events of English history and witness the intrigue, rivalry, struggle for power and ambition that culminated in the arrest and imprisonment of the princes and ended up in their hushed-up murders, only to result in the security if King Richard’s claim to the hierarchical throne as his authority as Richard III. The novel is considered as a riveting story about deception and conspiracy and a masterpiece of years of historical research. It ends up with a solution to the centuries old puzzle.

One of the other initial novels written by author Alison was published in the year 1996 as ‘The Life of Elizabeth I’. It was published by the Ballantine Books publishing house and went on to become a New York Times bestseller. The plot of the novel with the happenings in the life of Queen Elizabeth I of England. The opening sequence of the plot of the novel describes how Queen Elizabeth was the most influential of all sovereigns that England had ever known and how she used to remain an extremely private individual throughout her reign as the queen of England. The plot of the novel also describes the way she used to keep her own counsel and did not like to share her secrets with anyone. She did not use to trust even her most trusted and closest advisors. The novel also gives a beautiful and fresh insight about the life of Elizabeth I in a fascinating and brilliantly researched way. Author Alison has shared some provocative and new interpretations about her in this book. She has explained the myths about Elizabeth I set against a backdrop of passion, pageantry, war and intrigue. She has even examined the contradictions in her character and described her love for the Earl of Leicester. Alison ha also given some hint about whether or not Elizabeth conspired for killing his wife, which keeps the readers intrigued. Calling herself a Virgin Queen, Elizabeth I never married and Alison has tried to find out whether her choice of remaining single was because of her mother’s chilling fate. The novel very well appears to be an amazing and intimate portrait of the life of Queen Elizabeth I and gives a stunning and mesmerizing reading experience.

   I love Tudor history and have many books by Alison Weir and Phillipa Gregory. Bought at randem, I now wish to collate them into a series of readings in chronological order. Any assistance you can offer on Alison Weir’s books would be much appreciated
