Caitlin R. Kiernan is a popular American writer born in Ireland, who is famous for writing science fiction, weird fantasy, and dark fantasy novels. Her writing works include numerous comic books, 10 novels, more than 250 short stories, novellas and vignettes. Besides these, author Kiernan has also written some scientific papers in paleontology. She is the winner of the Bram Stroker and World Fantasy Awards, winning each of the awards twice. Author Kiernan was born on May 26, 1964, in Dublin, Ireland. When she was a child, her mother Susan Cleveland took her to the United States and stayed there permanently. For a major part of her childhood, author Kiernan has lived in Leeds, Alabama. She had developed an initial interest in paleontology, fiction writing, and herpetology. During her teenage years, author Kiernan resided in Trussville, Alabama. While studying in high school, Kiernan had started working at the Red Mountain Museum, located in Birmingham, Alabama, as a volunteer. She used to spend her summers on the paleontological and archaeological digs. Author Kiernan went on to graduate from the Alabama University in Birmingham, and then from the Colorado University in Boulder. Her subjects on interest were vertebrate paleontology and geology, and prior to the start of her career in fiction writing, Kiernan worked for some time as a teacher and in a museum. In 1988, author Kiernan penned a paper that described the species and genus of mosasaur, Selmasaurus. She wrote her debut novel The Five of Cups in 1992, but she was not able to publish it before 2003. The first released book of author Kiernan came out in 1998 and was called Silk. And her debut short story to be published is known as Persephone. This dark tale of science fiction was published in 1995. The most recent scientific releases of author Kiernan include a paper on biostratigraphy on the Alabama mosasaurs. It was released in the Vertebrate Paleontology Journal in 2002.
Author Kiernan’s short fiction stories have been selected for The Best Science Fiction of the Year, Mammoth Book of the Best New Horror, and The Best Horror and Fantasy series of the Year. Her work has been translated into numerous foreign languages, including Turkish, German, Finnish, Italian, Czech, French, Polish, Portuguese, Japanese, Spanish, Korean, and Russian. In 1996, author Kiernan was approached by author Nei, Gaiman and the DC/Vertigo editors for writing The Dreaming, which is a spin-off series of The Sandman originally written by author Gaiman. Kiernan started her work on this spin-off series in 1996 and continued writing until 2001. During this whole period, she worked closely with author Gaiman and described not just the original characters, but also added some new ones. Author Kiernan returned back to her comic writing in 2012 and penned Alabaster: Wolves. She even penned the novelization of the movie Beowulf. Two of author Kiernan’s books have been optioned by the Mid-World Productions for developing them into feature films. Author Kiernan has been roped in to write the screenplay of The Red Tree, while author Josh Boone will be writing the other book’s screenplay. Author Kiernan is always seen as a horror writer, but she has become tired of telling people that she is not. Some of her earlier works feature the subcultures of punk rock and goth. Sometimes, she used the pen name of Kathleen Tierney for writing a few of her books. Besides writing books, author Kiernan also entered in the fields of music and publishing. She even has a paper in her name at Brown University’s John Hay Library. Author Kiernan likes to describe herself as a lesbian, anthiest pagan, and a transsexual. Currently, she resides in Providence, Rhode Island, along with her partner named Kathryn A. Pollnac, who is a doll maker and a photographer by profession.
One of the book series written by author Caitlin R. Kiernan is called as Silk series. This series is comprised of 2 books in total, which were released between the years 1998 and 2004. The first book of this series is entitled ‘Silk’ It was released by the Roc Trade publication in the year 2002, after its original release in 1998. At the start of the book’s story, the author has described several young misfits, urban strays, and society’s cast-offs, who look for a thrill. They try to get their hands on anything cheap that is enough to for a single night. The alternative means used by the misfits for their drug consumptions include nicotine, caffeine. Sometimes they also sleepwalk on real drugs. And under the influence of those drugs, the addicts spend their nights up to the dawn in the shadowy back alleys and death rock clubs. Later, an entity named Spyder comes in the midst of the addicts. She serves as a patron saint for the lost and alienated individuals. This enigmatic Spyder invites all the young misfits into the mesmerizing world of her own. But, people begin to wonder whether the Spyder has been sent to save them or destroy them because of her suspicious activities.
The next book of the series is called ‘Murder of Angels’. It was also published by the Roc Trade publishers in 2004. Author Kiernan has introduced the chief characters in this book as Daria Parker, Niki Ky, Spyder Baxter. She has set the book in Birmingham, Alabama. At the beginning of the story of the book, it is depicted that Daria Parker and Niki Ky saw something shocking in an ancient house in Birmingham 10 years ago. But, they are not able to speak about it. Daria goes to the extent of denying what she saw and escapes into various addictions and music career. However, Niki did not have this many distractions. As she gets diagnosed with schizophrenia, she loses her years in anti-psychotics and therapy. After some time, Niki’s expired lover named Spyder Baxter calls her into an alien world, where Niki is called by the Hierophant. The alien people see her as a feared sorceress capable of opening portals between worlds. Now, it appears that Daria will have to encounter what actually happened around 10 years ago, if she intends to help Niki in saving a world or destroying it.
