When she was a child, her mother Susan Cleveland took her to the United States and stayed there permanently. For a major part of her childhood, author Kiernan has lived in Leeds, Alabama. She had developed an initial interest in paleontology, fiction writing, and herpetology. During her teenage years, author Kiernan resided in Trussville, Alabama. While studying in high school, Kiernan had started working at the Red Mountain Museum, located in Birmingham, Alabama, as a volunteer. She used to spend her summers on the paleontological and archaeological digs.
