Charlotte Bronte, who lived between the early and mid-nineteenth century, was an English woman of letters. Bronte was born in April 1816 in Thornton upon West Yorkshire, in the UK, and passed away in March 1855. During her time, she was an acclaimed novelist-cum-poet, educator, and doubled up as a governess. She is a notable figure in the context of European literature and particularly Victorian literature.

Charlotte Bronte, who died of suspected tuberculosis or possibly typhus –the issue is controversial– in her late thirties, authored several standalone novels, an omnibus, collections, and nonfiction work. In fact, some of her work is juvenilia. At the time of her premature death, she was still pregnant. Bronte, who coauthored collections with her siblings namely Emily Bronte and Anne Bronte, adopted various pseudonyms during her writing career. She went by the names Currer Bell, Lord Charles Albert, and Florian Wellesley.

Section on Books
A number of Charlotte Bronte’s were produced posthumously, some of them as recently as early 2000s. Nevertheless, Bronte debuted in the late 1840s. There are over 2,170 editions of Bronte’s debut novel, which she originally published under the pseudonym Currer Bell. The first edition of her first book was initially published on October 1847, titled Jane Eyre; and the standalone novel is shelved under the literary fiction (especially British literature), Gothic fiction, romance, historical fiction (particularly Victorian), and feminism genres.

The featured central character is called Jane Eyre. Meet protagonist Jane Eyre. Eyre is a child character. She was orphaned at a tender age, after typhus claimed her parents’ lives. She is mistreated by her kith and kin, except a kind uncle who, unfortunately, has since died. She starts seeking solace in dolls and books.

The watershed moment in Charlotte Bronte’s debut novel, Jane Eyre, is when protagonist Eyre starts schooling. A relative who hates her exerts influence over the administration, prompting Eyre’s mistreatment. She ultimately quits schooling and is employed at the famed Thornfield Hall. Bronte creates a dramatic scenario wherein Jane Eyre is madly in love with her master, falls out of love, then falls in love again with the nobleman.

Charlotte Bronte Awards
Unfortunately for her, author Charlotte Bronte did not clinch a literary prize during her lifetime. However, she was awarded posthumously. In 2004, Bronte bagged the All About Romance Reader Award. In 2007, she clinched the said award yet again. In both cases, she won in the historical category, courtesy of her 1847 novel Jane Eyre.
