Master of the Night
Master of the Night is the first book in Mageverse series. The book assumes that there is a parallel world to our world, known as Mageverse. Many years ago, an alien race arrived on earth on a missionary-type assignment to help the young races not to murder themselves by sharing with the people their powers.
In this series debut novel, we are informed that Merlin and the Lady of the Lake, a couple of the alien race left Arthur and his knights of the round table to protect the human race. Arthur and his kin are all now immortals with the females becoming witches and male vampires. These people can live both in human earth and the alternate version of the earth- Mageverse and are sworn to help humans survive.
But when Merlin arrived on Earth, it’s revealed that there were other alien races on the planet. One of the aliens was Geirolf who feeds on fear and death. He escaped the prison, and now he wants to unleash his vengeance on all Mageverse. But for his spell to work, which could wipe out all the witches and vampires in one shot, he needs one of each- a vampire and witch. So he abducts Erin and Reece Champion in an attempt to force Reece to turn Erin into a full witch and which has its complications as well as political ramifications.
And since Erin does not know the Mageverse, this makes it a good story as the reader get a better understanding of this alternate universe alongside Erin. At some point, Reece has to explain to Erin what everything was before and how things worked.
Angela Knight did a fantastic job, both characterization, and world-building. Through Erin, the reader can explore in detail this new world. One of the notable characters in the story is Reece Champion. He is the vampire champion of the US and is investigating a sudden spike in cult activities when he meets Erin Grayson. Erin is a descendant of the Knights of the Round Table. Surprisingly one of every ten of the knight’s descendants can be turned into a female witch or a male vampire. Having sex with Erin three times will initiate her powers, but the problem is that- if she is not compatible, it could drive her insane and she will have to be killed.
It also turns out that she’s investigating the spike in cult activities, but she does not realize that Reece is on her side too. Erin suspects her to be the leader of the cult. But it isn’t going to be long before they realize there is more going on than they initially thought. The two ends up locked in a cell, and they will have to decide if they can trust each other enough to work together. The only way to save themselves may be through changing Erin, but without a deep and personal connection, she may end up insane.
Master of Darkness
Master of Darkness is the final in Mageverse series. And because it’s the last in the series, you already know that there must be the ultimate showdown between good versus evil- in this case, Magekind versus Warlock, the leader of the Direkind army. But this doesn’t mean that there is a lack of compelling action and suspense, not to mention the steamy hot love scenes.
The main characters in this book are Miranda Drake and William Justice, a witchy daughter, and latent law enforcement officer, respectively. Justice was bitten and changed to a werewolf in the line of duty and had been acting as Miranda’s bodyguard.
As the story kicks off, the Warlock has sent two of his puppets to assassinate two Magekind operatives in Pakistan. One is an armored werewolf centaur, and the other turns into a long poisonous snake. While Justice and Miranda are investigating this crime, one of the victims gives them a prophecy that visits the fairy queen for more information on their respective roles in the war against the Warlock. The story’s main plot follows the couple as they fulfill the prophecy and progress to the climactic clash with the Warlock.
The romance aspect of this series proceeds as usual. Miranda is afraid of Justice’s alpha strength because of her past relationship experiences with dominant alpha werewolves plus the fact that the antagonist has cast a fear spell on her. For the two to complete their spirit bonding and realize their full powers, they must first break the fear spell upon Miranda.
Also, this is an action-packed story and a great way to conclude a terrific series. The build-up to the final combat is full of tragedy and suspense. The romance part of the story is steamy, angst-filled, and vividly portrayed. The main characters visit the fairy queen gives them a better understanding of another realm known as Elementalverse, where magic is more potent than any other place in the universe.
Angela Knight is a master of storytelling blending different characters from legends, mythology, and history. The famous Arthurian characters exist in the 21st century in this series. For example, the fairy king uses a credit card instead of gold; King Arthur wears a T-shirt, and Sir Gawain rides a Harley motorcycle. Shape-shifters, demons, fairies, and dragons are also part of the mix. The Mageverse is an alternate universe where magic is commonly used. The characters can move freely between mortal earth and Mageverse through portals and gates. The fans of Dark-Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon will find this a satisfying read.
