Freida McFadden is a name readers of modern thrillers see often. She is a best-selling American author who also works as a physician. Her medical specialty is treating people with traumatic brain injuries. This unique background gives her a factual understanding of the human mind, which she uses to inform her fiction.

Her books are known for being entertaining and hard to put down. She has a talent for creating characters that readers can connect with quickly. The protagonists in her stories are often ordinary people placed in intense situations. This makes their choices and the resulting tension feel immediate and personal for the audience.

She crafts narratives that keep the pages turning with steady momentum. The plots are structured to deliver surprises without feeling overly complicated. One of her most successful books is called The Housemaid. It became a hit and was turned into a movie released in 2025, proving the wide appeal of her storytelling approach.

Early and Personal Life

Freida McFadden grew up in midtown Manhattan with one sibling. Both of her parents worked in medicine. She wanted to be a physician from an early age and attended a competitive New York City high school that helped build her work ethic.

She studied math at Harvard before attending medical school. While training to be a doctor, she kept writing fiction and submitting manuscripts to publishers. After medical training, she began self-publishing, and her 2013 debut drew on her experiences as a medical intern.

She now lives outside Boston with her family and practices medicine part time. Her medical background allows her to write accurate scenes. New York City often appears as a setting in her novels, as growing up there continues to influence her work.

Writing Career

McFadden began her writing career in 2013, self-publishing The Devil Wears Scrubs and building a catalog of series and standalone thrillers. Her 2022 novel The Housemaid became an international bestseller and was adapted into a 2025 film that grossed $300 million worldwide. She would quickly follow this success up with a further two sequels in that series.

She continues to publish several books each year, with other popular titles including The Inmate, Never Lie, and Ward D. Her work earned a 2023 International Thriller Writers Award for The Housemaid. That same year, The Housemaid’s Secret won a Goodreads Choice Award.

I just started reading Freida McFadden when The Housemaid came out in the theaters. A coworker mentioned it and couldn’t wait to see the movie after reading the book. I was hooked! I can’t put her books down. I actually listen to them through my library’s digital library. If I forget my earbuds I just hold my phone close to me as I walk around the grocery store lol. I will be sad when I finish her books.

I love Freida McFaddens books. The next ones I want to read are Suicide Med/Dead Med; Brain Damage; The Ex and Death Row. No one has these books. Not the public library or Barnes and Noble. Is there anyway that it could be opened up to being published so more people may be able to read more of her books?

Also, try to see if your library can borrow it from nearby libraries. Doesn’t hurt to ask them. Ours borrowed a book from a library in Chicago before! I’m still shocked that happened

I started out with The Crash. I’ve been flying through them ever since. I Just love the twists and turns, always keeping you guessing on the ending. There were times in The Teacher that I wanted to go ahead and find the next chapter with Addie or Eve in it. I didn’t but it sure was tempting! Thank you so much for the entertainment.

I’ve Only recently started reading your books and can’t wait to read more. Just read The Teacher. Started it 2 nights ago and finished it yesterday. Could not put it down. The prologue grabbed me and I had to find out the answers. The twists and turns kept the pages turning. It’s a good thing I didn’t have to go anywhere for long and could keep coming back to it. Also enjoyed The Housemaid and now want to start from the beginning. Thank you!!!

I have read and loved everything you have ever written. Your imagination is phenomenal, and I am amazed at the wonderful variety in your plots and characters. I consider myself an accomplished reader, but I have yet to guess correctly how things are going to turn out in your novels.
That said, I was disappointed to find seven grammar or spelling errors in the Kindle version of Baby City, and I wonder if you have a website where I can report my findings so the errors can be corrected. (And if you’re in the market for a proof reader, let me know. 😉
Thanks for giving me many truly delightful reading hours.
