Sherwood Smith is an American Science Fiction and Fantasy writer for both teens and adults and was born in 1951. She started writing as a child, at the age of six, with homemade taped together paper towel books. She moved on as she grew and never lost her passion for writing. At age ten she started writing stories about another world and decided to turn her stories into comic books. At age thirteen she tried to publish her work but sadly none sold, but she did not give up.
When Smith graduated high school she decided to go to college and learn to rewrite her stories and novels. It took her fifteen years to finally get it right but she endured because she loved writing so much. During those fifteen years she lived and went to college in Austria. She decided to move back to the USA to get her master’s degree in history. She believes that “Studying history was a good thing for an author”. Afterwards she moved to Hollywood, where she is noted for wearing various hats in the film industry and working on other various projects. That is where she met her now husband and started a family.
She decided to become a teacher and retired from teaching after 20 years. She rewrote her stories and novels while teaching and finally in 1988 her first short story was published titled, Monster Mash. It was included in ‘Werewolves anthology” and that is when she got her fresh start. She continued on with her short stories and in 1993 the first in the five part Exordium Series “The Phoenix in Flight” was published.
The Phoenix in Flight is set in a space age that is referenced as a cross between the popular Star Wars and Dangerous Liaisons Series with a hint of Three Stooges humor. The book is about a character named Eusabian who waited twenty years to achieve his vengeance against Gelasaan, who is the Panarch of the Thousand Suns. Eusabian plans a take the throne, which does not go according to plan because Gelasaan’s third and youngest son Prince Brandon refused to go to his coming of age ceremony where the plan was to have him killed. Both of his brothers are already dead and he is next in line to the throne of the Thousand Suns.
With Prince Brandon Dead there would be no heir and Eusabian would be able to seize power with relative ease. Even though Prince Brandon is a womanizer and a Naval Academy washout he is still considered the last hope of the Thousand Suns. He is expected to bring the Empire back to glory. Brandon is setup in the book as the hero, while Eusabian is the villain. Smith’s way of writing makes you actually feel compassion for Brandon and true hatred for Eusabian. Brandon must face Eusabian and hold onto the throne if the Empire is to endure. Throughout the book you begin to gain a greater grasp of the story line which is to be presented throughout the rest of the series and as you progress through it, many readers have stated in their reviews that they felt a longing to reach the end and continue to the next.
The Thrones of Kronos is the last book in her Exordium Series. It is set in the same universe as the rest of the series and provides a riveting conclusion that leaves readers wanting more and opens the door to exactly that. Many people believe that the biggest risk with a long running book series is that they will fail to provide a proper ending to the series that has already been staged in previous books. The Thrones of Kronos delivers what is promised throughout the series. The Saga comes to a thunderous close with Eusabian and his armies in an occupation of the Empires capitol city of Arthelion. While his forces clash with those of Prince Brandon (the rightful ruler of the Thousand Suns Empire) his attention is focused not on the war but on an ancient alien weapon called the Sun Eater. He is coming very close to controlling this devastating weapon which he and Prince Brandon know will give him the upper hand in the war. However, Eusabian does not know that his own son is scheming against him for control in what is characterized as an almost ritual power struggle. This struggle finally comes to a head in the living quarters of the Sun Eater.
Prince Brandon is unaware of this power struggle and focuses his attention on the preventing the reactivation of the Sun Eater because he knows that its power will be turned on the worlds of the Thousand Suns which Eusabian is already trying to control with a brutal fist. But not only must he stop this he must also find a way to retake the beautiful capitol city of Arthelion. He believed that only then will he truly be the Panarch of the Empire of the Thousand Suns. Brandon is crowned Emperor and decided to marshal his fleet and either defeat Eusabian and reclaim his Throne to return peace to the empire or die trying. The book and series ends with an unbelievable amount of ways to continue, and perhaps Smith will continue. We will just have to wait with the proverbial ants in our pants to see.
Over the years Sherwood Smith has been nominated for several awards including the Nebula Award, where she was a finalist, the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award, and an Anne Lindbergh Honor Book. She continues to write novels and short stories and her love for writing is just as strong if not stronger than when she was only six. Readers all over the world are eager entranced by her books and many say once they start they “cannot stop” reading her books. She does not plan on retiring any time soon and her fan base is growing more and more every day. Calls have gone out worldwide to publishers to continue publishing her books and to even translate them into different languages.
