E.A. Meigs is a published author best known for the Dreamer series.
According to their biography, they acknowledge that one might ask how one starts writing a historical fiction book series and where one gets the knowledge and insight that allows one to breathe life into an ancient world where the inhabitants have long perished? Speaking for themselves, Meigs says that it has been a long and convoluted but never boring journey.
Meigs was bitten early by the writing bug. It wasn’t a small nibble but rather a hearty chomp. As her childhood years went by, the author filled endless notebooks. Once they had their first job all of the earnings went into the purchase of a manual typewriter. This is where they wrote their first silly full length three hundred page novel when they were just ten years old.
The author worked when they were young with his dad on his commercial fishing boat, but also began their career at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History. It was their good fortune to be employed there for four years. She worked with naturalists such as Robert Finch, John Hay, Donald Schall and Robert Prescott. Her title was Girl Friday, which meant she did whatever was needed at the moment, whether it was helping with field work, tending to resident animals on the grounds, sweeping floors, or returning shelved books in the library.
Growing up, the author had lots of beaches, marshes, and woodlands to explore. A small creek went by the house and a foot bridge gave them access to a green glen hidden among the trees. There she would put up a tent from whatever materials she could find, spending the night when her parents and the weather allowed. The tent was mostly a drop cloth put up between trees with a carpet underneath, and while it was neither effective at being weatherproof or bug-proof, the only thing that she cared about was that she could stay outside. She later was given a canvas tent that was musty but was still an improvement over her other shelters. She says that she always enjoyed camping and would even camp in the forest when in-between rentals as a young adult.
Megs had wanted to be a naturalist like the people she knew at the museum. But even though the study of nature was appealing, she just didn’t think that she could make a living at it. Once she graduated she went on to have a nautical career. It seemed an obvious choice since her father was a commercial fisherman and backyard builder of boats, but she was frequently the only woman at the work site or on board. She didn’t attempt to be one of the guys or to compete with them.
The Dreamer- The Beginning is the first book in The Dreamer series by E.A. Meigs. It is the debut in a series of novel that goes along with the life of Tris, also known as The Dreamer, Tor his father, and their pal and neighbor Black Wolf.
Around the time of the last Great Glacial Period of Earth, Europe was inhabited by the Neanderthal and the Cro-Magnon. This was a primitive world that was filled with a harsh and stunning beauty but it was also a really tough time in the history of mankind. People struggled to survive and dealt with dangers from an inhospitable climate and their position within the food chain of nature.
With this as the backdrop, Tris is a young Neanderthal man of the Old Ones clan who finds out that he is a Dreamer. A horrible vision breaks up his sleep when he sees that a tough animal has attacked his father and uncle, who are on a journey to the open tundra and are looking for fresh meat.
Tris gets their Cro-Magnon neighbor the giant Black Wolf to go on a trek to the grasslands to look for his uncle and Puh. His relationship with Black Wolf is slightly complicated with the fact that he is love with Morning Star, Black Wolf’s daughter.
Tris does not want to act on his feelings because he doesn’t think Morning Star and his family will be open to how he feels for her. While Black Wolf and Tris make their way across the landscape of the wild, he continues to have dreams, with each of them hinting at a fate that has befallen Puh and his uncle. As the story goes deeper, Tris’s dreams are part of it in this adventure of love, family, friendship, and more. Check it out and see what you think!
The Dreamer- The Gathering is the second in this series by E.A. Meigs. The saga continues as Tris’s small world expands when the Cro-Magnon people from the East start to settle in in greater numbers on the long-held territories of the Old Ones, also known as the Neanderthals.
Trouble develops as the groups come into competition for the same limited resources. It’s a perfect summer for Tris and his family while they take time to be in residence at the coast where they hunt seals, fish, and look for foods nearby. Tris is newly paired and happy when he finds out along with his mate that they are expecting a baby.
Later, a tragedy happens to Tris’s clan on their way to their forest home. Tris’s father is upset to the point of nearly becoming catatonic. Not that much longer after, Tor’s brothers come to get his help in defending their homes against the marauding men of The People.
The People from the East and the Old Ones were coexisting in relative peace until recently. But now they are afraid that the point of these attacks is to get them to leave their lands or starve them out, and the brothers are saying that they can’t fight them off without help. They feel that Tor cannot grasp how urgent the situation is and are dismayed at this fact.
Luckily, Black Wolf has a suggestion. He thinks that this conflict could be resolved at The Gathering. He volunteers to accompany Tris and his family to the Gathering of the People from the East so that they can find a resolution. They have no idea what is waiting for them.
