Ruth Plumly Thompson was a published American author.

She was born in Philadelphia in the U.S. on July 27, 1891. She would pass away April 6, 1976.

Ruth had always been an avid reader when it comes to Baum’s books. She had also been a children’s writer her entire life herself. She got her start in Philadelphia and started off her career in writing in 1914. This is when she took on a job working with the Philadelphia Public Ledger. She was busy writing a children’s column on a weekly basis for the newspaper.

She had had her children’s book The Perhappsy Chaps published already. Her second book was pending publication (titled The Princess of Cozytown) when the vice president of the publisher Reilly & Lee, William Lee, reached out to her and asked if she would continue the Oz series.

There were also rumors out there that she was the actual niece of Baum, but they were ultimately untrue. Ruth got started and would go on to write one Oz book a year for the period of 1921-1939. She was also a primary supporter when it comes to her mother (a widow) and her sister (an invalid), so the resulting annual income that she would get from writing the Oz books was very important when it came to her circumstances financially.

Her contributions to the series were imaginative and lively and would often feature a range of colorful characters. A theme that repeats over and over again through her novels with not a lot of variation does seem to occur. In one of her novels, a child and a supernatural companion while going through Oz or a close by region find that they are in a strange community where the inhabitants do a single activity, often then capturing these travelers and then making them do this same activity.

A different theme also features elderly characters. This includes the Good Witch of the North, who has been restored to an age where she can get married, potentially because the author herself had never been married personally. She also had a tendency to use romantic love stories more often, something that Baum typically did not employ in his own fairy tales, with exceptions.

Baum’s younger protagonists also frequently would be little girls, while Thompson often were boys. She would also utilize humor more than Baum would and considered her work to be for children. Baum was considering his younger audience first and understood that the readership was made up of all ages. Her last story was originally not written as an Oz book, but became one anyway. It is titled The Enchanted Island of Oz and was released in 1976.

The Royal Book of Oz is the fifteenth book in the Oz series, written by Ruth Plumly Thompson. If you are a fan of the wide and wonderful world of Oz, you will definitely want to check out this classic tale, one of many in the vintage Oz series.

Neill, grab a copy for yourself and follow along on the adventure.

When Prince Pompadore of Pumperdink is celebrating his 18th birthday, something happens that no one expects. His birthday cake ends up exploding, which reveals a magic mirror, a magic scroll, and a doorknob, of all things.

The scroll offers a warning to the young prince, telling him that if he does not take steps to wed a ‘proper princess’ inside of seven days, all of his kingdom will end up disappearing. The prince could blow this off, but he chooses to take it seriously.

So it is that he takes off on an adventure to the Emerald City. He is accompanied by Kabumpo, the wise elephant of the kingdom. They are going there for the purposes of Pompa getting married to Princess Ozma. She is the sole proper princess that the elephant can think of as being worthy of his prince. Can he convince the princess to marry him? Will it end up being enough to save his kingdom? Read this book in the classic Oz series to find out!
