Ordinary Saints is a 2025 novel by Niamh Ni Mhaoileoin. This is the type of debut novel that readers will not want to miss out on. Arresting and interesting beyond all measure, there is a reason why this book was shortlisted for the Women’s Prize Discoveries Award!

It also looks more into themes of grief, family, queer identity, and the legacy that the Catholic Church has left in Ireland. If these are interesting themes to you, check out this book and see what you think.

Jay sometimes thinks about what she would say to people. She would ask them if they could imagine her being there in Saint Peter’s Square in the front row as the lesbian sister of an actual saint.

Jay grew up in a devout household in Ireland and today resides in London. She lives there with her girlfriend and wants to live there in the day to day, residing in the moment. She’s not too interested in thinking about the past or the future too much and prefers to just take the day as it comes.

Then she finds out some news about her older brother that makes her head spin. She loved her older brother, and he passed away in a terrible accident. Then she finds out that he might be made into a Catholic Saint. She starts to realize that she’s going to have to confront her family and take on her childhood and herself in the process.

Sometimes we think that we’ve moved on from things, and something comes along to stir it all up. Jay thought that she had processed everything that she went through, but now she’s wondering if there is still more to be done.

This novel was inspired by the devout upbringing that the author actually had and is a brilliant debut from a new voice in fiction that readers have to experience for themselves. In this book, Mhaoileoin asks who decides how we are remembered and who we will become in the future and goes into themes of identity, family, religion, and more.
