Akil Kumarasamy is an American published author.

Akil hails from New Jersey. Prior to her books, she has written fiction that has been featured in places such as Boston Review, American Short Fiction, and Harper’s Magazine.

The author attended the University of Michigan, where she graduated with her MFA. She is a fiction fellow at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown and the University of East Anglia.

Her debut book is Half Gods. The 2018 collection was followed by the debut of her 2022 fictional novel, Meet Us by the Roaring Sea.

In the close future, a young woman is startled when she finds her mother’s dead body. Her mother is on the kitchen floor in Queens and this sets off a path that takes her through archives, language, artificial intelligence, and television in order to find a way that she can come back to herself.

She starts translating an older manuscript that is about a group of women in medical school. The students are living through a drought and are perched at the edge of war. The women come up with a new way of existence with the intent of helping the people around them. In the process of translating this manuscript, her life and the manuscript’s content start to get mixed up.

Throughout everything that happens, she will find herself questioning her moral compass and goodness thanks to a childhood friend showing up as well as the presence of a stranger and an odd A.I. project.
