This is the story of triumphing against impossible odds, set in the year 1940. The world is being torn apart by war and in June Hitler’s army captures the Channel Islands. It is a tough blow but still is the only part of Great Britain occupied by German forces. The islands have been abandoned by Churchill and left behind by the Allies, cut off from any means of assistance. As time goes on, the situation that the Islands find themselves in becomes more and more desperate.
Hedy Bercu is a young Jewish girl who decided to leave Vienna in order to go to the island of Jersey two years previous during the Anschluss. But despite all of this she finds that she has been trapped once again by the Nazis and the worst part about all of it is that there is no escape for her. The only hope that she has is to make herself useful to the Germans by working as a translator.
This allows her to hide in plain sight, something that she can do with the help of her friends and the community, as well as a German officer with sympathies. As the war gets even worse, the rations start to go down and the neighbors are all getting more suspicious about each other. Hedy’s life is in increasing danger every day. It’s going to have to take a strong act if she is going to be rescued from being deported to the concentration camps.
This is a story about being courageous and discovering love under tough circumstances. Hedy’s story is able to remind us all that when it comes to being a hero, sometimes it’s up to everyday people to stand up to injustice.
