It’s the summer of 1990, and Cathy’s brother Matty is still waiting to get his GCSE results in. They’re coming in two weeks, and he’s going to get the best results in school. But it turns out that he’s not going to get the results in the way that he would have thought because he gets hit by a car on the way home from being out, and suffers some pretty bad head injuries in the process. This leaves him in a permanent vegetative state.

Over the years, Cathy and her parents worked to take care of Matty. They even built an extension onto the village pub where they worked and lived. They kept taking care of him, talking to him, feeding him, bathing him and loving him. There ultimately came a time where it seemed that the best thing that they could do for Matty and themselves was to let him go.

Cathy uses her honesty and emotional power to talk about the horrible pain that came from losing her brother and the decision that ultimately changed the lives of her family forever. Cathy ends up reconnecting with the brother that she lost through this process and at last is able to view the end of his life as it was, which was a final act of love.

This is an emotional, powerful, and moving book and the story of a journey of love, grief, survival, and more, as well as the ties that bind all of us together. If you have ever lost someone close to you or loved a sibling deeply or wondered whether it might be tougher to prolong someone’s life to say goodbye, this is a book that you will certainly find value in. Check out this book from Cathy Rentzenbrink to follow along with every word.
