Amanda Rizkalla is a published author.

She is a Steinbeck Fellow and a Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing Fellow. Amanda has been a writer in residence at Hedgebrook, Ragdale, Djerassi, Mountain Words, Monson Arts, the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts, and Blue Mountain Center.

Amanda attended Stanford University where she graduated and went on to get her MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She was a Kemper Knapp Fellow there. The work that she has done led to her receiving a grant from the Barbara Deming Memorial Fund. She was also nominated for the Pushcart Prize. Her debut novel is titled Hungered.

Hungered is the first book to come out from Amanda Rizkalla. It is a 2026 work that is the perfect fit for readers who loved The House on Mango Street and We The Animals. For now, Sofia is 12 years old and she is living with her family in their car.

This includes her mother and her brother Rafa. The days that she spends all include freeways and strip malls all over the West Coast, different images that come to her as her mother looks for a place that will be safe enough for them to park for the night. She is considering impossible choices. Sofia does catch little glimpses of what it is like to be kind from strangers– and cruel too– and tries to deal with her family falling apart while also trying to make a space and an identity for herself.

This haunting novel shows the fault lines of an existence that is full of economic insecurity while also looking into what it means to come of age during a moment where you are displaced.
