Artist Marianne Glass has the unfortunate experience of falling to her death, but when she does, everyone says that it was just a horrible accident. But Rowan Winter was once the one closest to her, and she has some doubts about what happened.
Ever since she was a young girl, Marianne had struggled with paralyzing vertigo. It greatly affected to her to the point where Rowan is certain that her friend never would have chosen on her own to go so close to the edge of the roof. There must have been something else at work, some bad forces at play, that had led to Marianne’s terrible demise.
Rowan is greatly affected by the passing of Marianne in more ways than one. The entire Glass family and Marianne’s friendship had once meant everything to Rowan. She had been just a regular teen girl without a mother and a father that was absent a lot. They were an intellectual household with lots of liveliness, representing an entire world full of opportunity, mystery, abundance and glamour.
Things used to be so good between the two of them, but things have been off ever since they were first estranged. Ever since then, the only things that she has known about Marianne or what is going on in her life is what’s reported in the papers. She rose quickly in the London art world and apparently had a romance with her gallerist, but that’s the extent of what Rowan knows.
In order to find out what really happened with her friend’s death, Rowan needs to find out more. She needs to know whether Marianne was in danger or distress, whether she had any enemies. She starts to look for clues in Marianne’s most recent work, in her relationships, and in her friendship with a fellow artist.
The only issue is that the more that she looks into things, the more concerned she is about what she finds. A deeper investigation is starting to make all of it look more sinister than she was prepared for. A past secret coming up may end up leading to Rowan worrying about her own well-being in the end.
It turns out that looking for the truth can be very dangerous when someone does not want you to find it. Can Rowan get to the bottom of the passing of her friend or will she find herself to be the next target instead? And does Marianne’s family even want to know the truth? Read Keep You Close by Lucie Whitehouse to find out!
