The Half Life of Joshua Jones is a 2016 book written by Danny Scheinmann. If you’ve been wanting something new to read in your life, check out this work that is your next potential favorite read and see what you think. Love drama that belongs to the characters and not to you? This might be the pick for you.
Main character Joshua Jones is finding that in many ways, his life is failing. Everything that seems to be going wrong that could go wrong is finding a way to do that. He’s lost his job, and you would think that he could lean on his spouse for support. That’s going to be difficult to do as now his wife has decided to leave him to be with another woman. The cherry on top of this sundae of chaos is that he no longer has a place where he can live as he has been evicted from his flat.
Dealing with feeling defeated and like everything is going wrong, about to be truly homeless, it appears that things are not going well for Joshua Jones. When he has a random encounter with Angela, a beguiling stranger, it ends up leading to a series of strange and definitely surreal events that might just end up sending Josh’s world as he knows it off course from where it has been.
Angela is a femme fatale who is incredibly impulsive. Now she’s come to a decidedly low point in her life. She’s done what she can to seek refuge from her problems by finding safety in the arms of a stranger. This leads to a random moment of tenderness between them in a cafe. The only thing that makes this unusual is that as she makes her way away from Joshua, she chooses to step into the path of an oncoming bus.
Angela falls into a coma as a result. Josh is still under the spell of an encounter with her that she never saw coming. He is pulled to her and pretends to be her boyfriend– something that will end up pulling their fates even more close together. They only met for such a brief time but it turns out that during the course of that time, it was enough to make a huge impact.
The more that he becomes obsessed, the more that the situation starts to become unknowingly dangerous. His life just keeps unraveling and as it does he starts to question his sanity. When Angela’s true identity is shown, it not only proves to be shocking, but also shows a truth about himself that he may not like seeing.
This novel is a combination of psychological drama and romance, pairing a fairy tale with suspense for an epic result. The result is a darkly humorous novel that is full of wonder, mystery, and an engaging story that pulls readers in from start to finish.
