Mark Slouka is an accomplished American author.

He is the author of several books both in fiction and nonfiction. His works have done so well that they have been translated into over a dozen languages for readers to enjoy. He has written stories that have been selected twice to be included in Best American Short Stories. Meanwhile, his essays have been featured three different times in Best American Essays. Slouka’s stories ‘Crossing’ and ‘The Hare’s Mask’ have been picked for the PEN/O.Henry Prize Stories.

Slouka is a Columbia graduate and was a 2008 finalist for the British Book Award for The Visible World. His collection of essays titled Essays from the Nick of Time was the winner of the PEN/Diamonstein-Speilvogel Award for the Art of the Essay. Slouka has been a contributing editor of Harpers Magazine since 2001. His writing has also been featured in publications such as Orion Magazine, Ploughshares, Bomb, Agni, The Paris Review, and Granta.

Slouka is a recipient of a Guggenheim fellowship and a NEA fellowship. He has also served as an instructor on writing and literature at Columbia, Harvard, and The University of Chicago. He is also working on a sequel to his novel Brewster that is titled Out West. His story ‘The Woodcarver’s Tale’ received a National Magazine Award in Fiction in 1995 for Harper’s.

Mark is married and shares his life with Leslie (his wife) and Zack (his son) as well as Maya (his daughter). Zack is a musician and Maya serves as a literary editor.

When the narrator is an adult he makes his way to Prague in the hopes that he can find out more about a love affair that is taking place between his mother (who at this time is still young) and a member of the resistance who goes by Tomas.

The affair between them came to an untimely end– something that he senses may have been part of the reason behind why Ivana is so unhappy. Without being able to get all the answers that he is after, the narrator pictures the lovers as participating in an honest and authentic moment of the war. The story that ends up telling is deeply romantic. Through this process he is able to come up with an ending for the story and also create the start of his own.

Brewster is a 2013 novel by Mark Slouka. This is a book that the New York Times Book Review described as being ‘devastatingly agile’. Readers have loved this book but the critics have also enjoyed it and showered this book with awards and recognition.

When forces start to affect them that they have no power over, Jon finds that he might be on the greatest race of his life– one that could end up making up for his past and helping to rescue all of them.
