She was born in New York City, where she grew up. Elizabeth attended Harvard University, where she graduated with her BA. She obtained her MFA in fiction from UC Irvine. There she received the Schaeffer Writing Fellowship.

Elizabeth is known for writing several fictional novels. These include Fireworks, December, The Why of Things, and The Mercy Seat. She is married and shares a daughter with her husband.
