Beatrice Colin is an accomplished published author and a radio dramatist.

She has written several novels, two of which were for children, and has penned several plays for BBC Radio 4. Beatrice recounts that she is inspired by old books, new places, bits of conversation and boards on Pinterest, which includes seed catalogs from the nineteenth century.

Beatrice says that she is a grower, a list maker, a walker of old paths, and (at the time) a mother of teenagers. The author says that writing novels helps her find out something new about history, the world, and herself.

Beatrice was born in the city of London but grew up in Scotland. She currently resides in Glasgow. She is known for writing novels such as To Capture What We Cannot Keep, The Glimmer Palace (a Richard and Judy Pick that was shortlisted for many different awards such as a British Book Award), Pyrates Boy (shortlisted for the SBT Children’s Book Award 2015) and her novel My Invisible Sister, which was adapted into a movie for television by Disney.

She is a former journalist and has seen her writing be featured in a variety of magazines and newspapers. These include The Scotsman, The List, Black Book, and The Guardian. Today she currently teaches creative writing at the University of Strathclyde.

Despite this turn of events, she is able to find refuge early in her life at a Catholic orphanage in Berlin.

Going on from there is an incredible variety of reinventions for Lily. She goes from orphan to maid, to a bride of war, to a nightclub girl, and a script typist. She will eventually become one of the leading silent film stars in Germany as well as enter into an incredible romance that not only spans the decades and the continents but ultimately could end up costing her all that she was working for.

Engaging in a way that few novels are able to achieve, Beatrice Colin has written an incredible work that readers won’t want to miss. The Glass House is a 2020 book written by Beatrice Colin. The year is 1912 and the place is Scotland. Main character Antonia McCulloch is living a life that has not exactly gone the way that she thought it would. She had it all planned out but it seems that life has ideas of its own.

She has been married for some time to her husband Malcolm, but it seems that they have drifted apart through the years. Her art career always seemed like it was going to go somewhere, but it turns out that it has amounted to nothing. Now when she takes a look in the mirror, the only thing that she can see is the disappointment written over her own face.

Despite all of this, Antonia still has some things in her life she can count on. She has Balmarra, the grand Scottish estate owned by her family, which is joined by its glass house that is full of exotic plants that are able to transport her somewhere else entirely with their lush exquisiteness.

Then Cicely Pick, the wife of her estranged brother, shows up without being announced. She has her daughter in tow and a ton of trunks, enough to seemingly last the summer. Antonia feels herself become instantaneously suspicious. What could have motivated her sister in law to come all this way from India except an inheritance?

Despite all of this, Cicely is there and brings a great deal of excitement into Antonia’s own life. As they start to get to know each other more and grows more familiar, Antonia begins to realize that Cicely has her own burdens. As a friendship starts up between them, things start to be going well. However, both of the women are keeping secrets.

When the secrets that Cicely and Antonia are keeping to themselves become too large to reveal, the truth could end up upturning the delicate balance between them– as well as the rest of their lives.
