Andrew Davidson is a successful published author.

The narrator of The Gargoyle is nameless and handsome and is driving on a dark road when a flight of arrows appears to come at him. Distracted by the event, he ends up crashing the car into a ravine. When he wakes up, he is in the burn ward, going through a torture that only the damned could relate to. A random series of events has led to a consequence of direly epic and disastrous proportions.

The character finds that the life that he thought he was going to live has ended. Now he is a monster, but the truth of the matter is that all of this is just getting started. One day Marianne Engel comes into his life. The sculptress of gargoyles informs him that once upon a time, they were lovers in medieval Germany.

In the wild artist’s telling, he was a mercenary who had been badly burned. She was a scribe and nun who nursed him back to health while they were in the Engelthal monastery. The more that she tells her stories and the more time that he spends with her, he finds himself coming back to life and being drawn to love once more.
