Her young adult vampire series called First Kill, based on a short story the author wrote with the same title, is being adapted for Netflix with Belletrist Productions producing. She loves to haunt the streets of Paris or make her way through the English hillsides. When she is not busy doing that, she resides in Edinburgh, Scotland. You can usually find her in a coffee shop corner, thinking about monsters.

She was born in California but grew up in the state of Tennessee in Nashville. The author had a British mother and an American father, which helped with creative inspiration. She attended Harpeth Hall School before graduating from Washington University in 2009 with her Bachelor of Fine arts. She would receive her masters from the University of Edinburgh where she specialized in depictions of monstrosity in medieval art. Today she likes to divide her time between Colorado, Denver, and Scotland.

Schwab was able to complete her first unpublished novel in her sophomore year at the University of Edinburgh but was able to sell her debut novel to Disney before graduation (a novel titled ‘The Near Witch’). The book was published in 2011 from Disney and is a fairy tale romance that sees Lexi in a small town where kids start going missing. The book was out of print in under two years but was reissued again in 2019 thanks to Titan Books.

Schwab also had the honor of being invited to give the Tolkien Lecture in 2018 at Pembroke College, Oxford. In the lecture, she would talk about how she found fantasy through the work of J.K. Rowling as well as how she sees fantasy as a powerful tool that lets writers and readers go beyond the limits of the ordinary world.

The author loves to write books but is also the host of a podcast that is called ‘No Write Way’. When she is not busy with that she likes to spend her time on tour or dealing with her knowledge of just how short life is and she won’t be able to read every book. She also tends to save TikTok videos for recipes that in all truth she will probably not get around to making. She enjoys swimming, running, and cycling– separately. Schwab came out as gay at 28 years of age.

Victor and Eli first met as college roommates, and the two had a lot in common. The brilliant boys were arrogant and lonely in the same ways, and they saw the same sharpness and ambition that they had in themselves in each other.

When they take on senior year, they find that they also have a shared research interest in near-death experiences, adrenaline, and somewhat supernatural events. While talking, they find that this reveals an interesting possibility that someone could develop extraordinary abilities under the correct conditions. It’s only when the boys take their thesis to experiment with that they find that it’s all about to go wrong.

A decade later, Victor breaks out of prison and wants nothing more to track down his former friend and current enemy. Helped by a young girl with abilities, he starts the search. At the same time, Eli is on his mission to get rid of everyone he can find with super powers, besides his sidekick.

With both on their own journeys, these arch-enemies are pursuing revenge. Who will make it out in the end? Can the two call this thing off or is it too late? Read this fascinating fantasy book from V.E. Schwab to find out!
