Think of England is a 2002 book by Alice Elliott Dark. Dark’s strong and emotional first novel follows along with the reckoning of one woman contending with a childhood tragedy that is set during mid-sixties America and seventies London.
Two different events go down on February 9, 1964. The Beatles make their appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show and later that night Jane MacLeod is about to find out that at nine years old, her life has changed permanently. It has been said that children know how to observe well but interpret poorly. Her interpretation of what happens that evening will end up shaping the course of her life, often in ways that she does not recognize.
This book follows Jane from being in the midst of a strong love affair in the ex-pat scene to London in its punk era to working as a mother in New York to the country for a family reunion. All the while, she will have to finally stand up and deal with the ghost that has always been between her and her dream of having a happy family. Check out this novel to see what you think!
Fellowship Point is a 2022 novel written by Alice Elliott Dark. This is a book that places like The Boston Globe are calling a ‘magnificent storytelling feat’ and the story of a friendship of two women who are very different but also share histories, loyalty, sorrows, and approaching eight summers on a point of land on the Maine coast, set across the arc of the twentieth century.
Agnes Lee is a children’s book author who would love to secure her legacy. She wants nothing more than to complete what she is aware will be the last volume of the pseudo-anonymously written Franklin Square novels. Even more consuming is the fact that she wants to permanently protect the majestic coast peninsula in Maine, the area known as Fellowship Point.
In order to be able to donate the land to a trust, Agnes has to convince shareholders to work to dissolve a partnership that has existed for generations. One of these shareholders is Polly, her best friend.
Polly Wister has had a completely different life than Agnes has had. She is a married woman who is well off and has children, and defines herself by the devotion that she has to her husband– a philosophy professor.
She does her best to make harmony and beauty in the home, in friendships, and in her family. Polly soon discovers that her loyalties have been torn between the wishes of her best friend and those of her sons. The only question is what Polly wants.
Agnes’ designs get even more confused when Maud Silver, a young book editor, goes out to try and convince Agnes that she should write her memoirs. The resistance Agnes has to this cannot keep memories and secrets that have been long buried from coming to the surface with repercussions for all of them.
This is a contemporary novel that you won’t want to miss out on. So many readers and critics have praised this book, with The Washington Post calling it an ‘ambitious and satisfying tale’. The novel is all about caring for the people and places that we love, and The Christian Science Monitor relays that this ‘magnificent novel affirms that change and growth are possible at any age’.
What will happen with Agnes, Polly, and Maud? Anything is possible in Fellowship Point. Check out this compelling book from Alice Elliott Dark to find out what happens!
