Emma Forrest is a British-American novelist, film director, journalist, and screenwriter who was born December 26, 1976 in London but now lives in Los Angeles.

She is known for having written two memoirs. The first of these was titled Your Voice in My Head and is going to be adapted into a feature film.

She was born into a family where her American mother was also a writer for British television and her father was British. Emma was 15 years old when she wrote a story on Madonna for the London Evening Standard. She would leave school to write a Generation X column that was published in the Sunday Times where she would write about different British pop and indie bands that were on the road. Richey Edwards, member of The Manic Street Preacher, was the first person that she interviewed for the column.

Emma has worked for a variety of publications, including Time Out, Harper’s Bazaar, Vanity Fair, Vogue, NME, The Guardian, Interview, and Blackbook. She contributed an essay in 2011 to Ceremonials, an album by Florence and the Machine. It was included on the CD’s booklet.

The author has written several fictional novels and started off with Namedropper in 1998, following that with Thin Skin, Cherries in the Snow, Royals, and Father Figure.

In 2001, she contributed to the anthology Love & Squalor on J.D. Salinger, with an essay that described his influence on current younger writers. She would co-write and edit her first nonfiction book in 2007. Titled Damage Control, it was an anthology of essays that took on the topic of the emotional pain that women go through for their own physical well-being and features contributions from a variety of women such as Sarah Jones and Marian Keyes.

Your Voice in My Head would be her first memoir, followed up by Busy Being Free in 2022. This book was all about her divorce and going back to living in the city of London as a single parent. She also shares more memoir-themed insights on her Substack ‘The Peaceful Transfer of Power’.

Forrest also wrote a screenplay about Jeff Buckley that was purchased by Plan B Entertainment in 2000. In 2009, her screenplay LIARS (AE) was purchased by Scott Rudin at Miramax and had Richard Linklater attached to direct. Her other screenplays being developed are Know Your Rights and How Could You Do This to Me. She was picked to be one of Variety’s ‘Top Ten Screenwriters to Watch’ in 2009. Emma has been attached also to Colin Farrell but would get married to Ben Mendelsohn in 2012, divorcing in 2016 after having a child together in 2014.

Your Voice in My Head is a 2011 book by Emma Forrest. This memoir is about the death of her psychiatrist and then her break-up with her partner. It will be adapted into a feature film that will be written by Forrest. Directed by Francesca Gregorini, it will star Emma Watson as the lead.

Emma Forrest settled down in Manhattan at 22 years of age where she was on contract to the Guardian. That was when she realized that the quirks she had had somehow gone beyond being eccentric and into that place where people sometimes lose their lives.

She was all on her own and in a bad cycle of bulimia and cutting while also being pulled to relationships that were damaging and cruel. She found herself in the chair of a slim and optimistic psychiatrist, the type of man who had a sense of humanity and wisdom who would help her with everything and help her recover when she attempted to end her life.

Emma had a great family and supportive friends and they circled around her in panic. She was about to drown but also still working, exploring, and writing. One day she ended up falling in love. One day she called to make an appointment with her psychiatrist– and found that he was no longer there.

He had passed away at 53 years of age and left behind his young family, who he had fought so hard to survive for. She was adrift and when her relationship fell apart Emma was forced to do what she can to survive. A unique and thoughtful work that is ultimately about our relationship with ourselves and one that you won’t want to miss, particularly if you are a big memoir fan.
