Matson Taylor is a British published author.

He grew up in the flat part of Yorkshire, coming from a family very familiar with farming. He had an idyllic childhood where he was surrounded by cows and horses as well as bicycles and ice cream. His father was a footballer and Matson recalls that he never forgave him for making it onto the school rugby team while not getting anywhere close to the football team.

Today he resides in the city of London. He works as a design historian and a novelist as well as an academic writing tutor at the V&A, Royal College of Art, and Imperial College. He attended the Royal College of Art and after that kept busy teaching at various museums and universities. Besides being an author, he has worked on Camden Market, made an appearance in an Italian television commercial, and was a pronunciation coach for the Catalan Opera.

Matson says that he tries to get back to Yorkshire as much as he can so that he can see friends, family, and get a good haircut. The author has always loved to tell stories and has even taken the ‘Writing a Novel’ course by Faber Academy.

His work at the V&A museum helped to inspire his first novel, The Miseducation of Evie Epworth, which was released in 2021 by Simon & Schuster. It would go on to be a bestseller and was selected for the Richard & Judy Bookclub and the BBC Radio 2 Bookclub. He would follow the book up with the sequel All About Evie, which covered the conclusion of the sixties and the start of the seventies.

The Miseducation of Evie Epworth is the first book in the series by the same name by Matson Taylor. This was a Richard & Judy Summer Book Club Pick in 2021 and has entertained tons of readers. Evie Epworth is 16 years old in the summer of 1962. She is about to become a woman, but is still uncertain about the type of woman that she is going to be. Up to this point, her life has been fairly average. She has school, cows, guides, lacrosse, village parties, and more. All the usual stuff for a girl of her age living where she does. But her idols are Shirley MacLaine, the Queen, and Charlotte Brontë, and she dreams of going to a world far away from East Yorkshire and all its rural charm.

Evie would love to live in a glamorous world under the lights of London, but she fears that her dreams are going to be dashed by her stepmother Christine. The woman is manipulative and after money and Evie feels that she is going to be destined to live a boring life of shampooing hair at the local salon– something that cannot be her fate.

Evie is lucky to have some friends on her side that are determined not to let her evil stepmother get her way. With their help and the Adam Faith posters on her wall, she hatches a plan that could get her future back. Christine is not going to ruin it. If everything goes well she’ll see her plan get pulled off and maybe even find who she is meant to be.

Can Evie do what it takes in order to obtain her independence and live her dream life? Or is it simply a dream that is never going to be realized? Will her stepmother win out in the end or can Evie break free and make a life of her own?

Evie is now ten years older and has seen more of life, but it’s unclear whether she has become any wiser along the way. In Waterstones in 1972, Evie has now become a young woman and has moved to the city of London. There she has settled down and is currently employed by the BBC.

Evie has gotten all that she used to dream about back in her hometown, and it’s everything that she ever thought that it could be. She has a great career, an interesting life, a leatherette briefcase, and even an Ossie Clark poncho.

After an incident that involves a pottery mug and Princess Anne, Evie starts to understand that she is going to have to rethink her life. She’s going to have to put together everything and work through grief and love, all while wearing cork-soled platform sandals.

Evie is now in her twenties and she has to deal with things from the past and issues in the future. Can a sixties miseducation get her ready for the growing pains that the seventies are going to bring? This is a sweet story that is very witty and a testament to the power of friendship.

This is such a wonderful book and with so many negative or dystopian works out there today, this is a lighter read that brings that tenderness and joy that isn’t always common in today’s writing!
