Brooke Skie is a successful published author.
She says that she is a cat person, but somehow along the way she has come to own a dog. She is the writer of some small town romance cozy stories that feature cats who have attitude and places that have a bit of magic.
She frequently becomes lost in the worlds that she comes up with and the characters that she discovers there.
The Next Chapter Bookshop is the first book in the Leafwood Falls series by Brooke Skie. This is a fun and light series that is a quintessentially cozy story that feels like a warming cup of tea or a comforting bowl of chicken soup.
Charlie Whitmore is an attorney working and living in Manhattan. She had no idea that she would inherit the bookshop her aunt owned in Leafwood Falls and makes the trip there– but has no plans of sticking around. She’s just going to do what she needs to do in order to settle the estate and then move on.
The Oak & Ink Bookshop has been loved by locals for years. It has the habit of putting the right story into the hands of a reader and the people in town have always appreciated it. But Charlie has not come here for the magic, the whimsy or the charm. She wants to get what she needs to do done and return to her high powered life.
The only issue is that her plans in Leafwood Falls immediately fall apart. There is the orange cat Hemingway, the creaky-floored shop with its shifting shelves, and the hints that there is something more out there. There is also the community, which is warm, welcoming, and easy to fall in love with.
Charlie works overtime to get to the bottom of the secrets held by her aunt and also gets further into small town life. She discovers that she is pulled into the type of world that she never anticipated and ends up being attracted to two different men. There is Lawrence, a developer, and Ethan, a local contractor.
Charlie finds her heart is opening but now has to pick between a future that she built up and the one that is building itself up around her every day. This is a book that is all about connections and the magic that can occur when you choose love and give yourself a chance to be happy and belong somewhere. Check out the first book in this series to follow along with every word.
The Copper Kettle Cafe is the second book in the Leafwood Falls series by Brooke Skie. Check out this sequel that can be read as a fun followup to the first book in this series or enjoyed on its own.
When a chef with a perfectionist streak who demands that everything be uniform ends up meeting an organic farmer who thinks that imperfection has character, what will end up happening? Olivia Mercer finds that her culinary career that she has put so much effort into planning out is falling apart after her fancy Boston restaurant falls apart in the wake of scandal.
Her reputation is doing poorly and the job prospects are difficult to see right now, so Olivia feels that she has no other choice but to pick up and try to pick up the pieces somewhere else. She comes back to her hometown of Leafwood Falls so that she can manage the cafe in town for a little while, all while Maggie, a friend of the family, goes through cancer treatment.
Meanwhile, the Copper Kettle Cafe seems like it might need a little updating as nearly everything about it screams that it is stuck in the past. There’s the old espresso machine that seems to have a preference for who ends up operating it, and the quotes on the chalkboard that show up every morning, as well as the recipe box owned by her grandmother that seems to have a special knack for providing the precise recipe that she requires at the moment.
There is still Hemingway, the orange cat from a close by bookshop who may be cranky but also has a special talent for appearing just when Olivia requires guidance– sometimes when she does not even want it.
Her plan is to keep the cafe going for six months and work on it and then just go back into the culinary world. That’s the place that she feels that she belongs. It turns out that Leafwood Falls may have other plans that make sticking to her original goal a little more difficult than the chef thought it would be.
She ends up getting into a confrontation with James Foster, the local farmer, over his organic produce (she believes it to be less than consistent). What starts off as a fight ends up revealing an unexpected chemistry. She thinks that food requires technical perfection, while he thinks that it ought to have soul.
James ends up growing vegetables that have their own character, while she comes up with dishes using precision. They are wrong for each other on paper in every way, but something about the two of them being together just works.
When Olivia finds her grandmother’s recipes, she can’t help herself from picturing the future of the cafe and imagining it all over again. In the process, she discovers that she is questioning all that she believed to be important in the course of her career.
An important job offer ends up coming down the line that could rescue her culinary reputation, and when it does, Olivia has to figure out what makes her happy. Is she going to go back to the culinary world and what she knows to try and start again or will she try to make it work in Leafwood Falls with a farmer who shows her that the best recipes don’t always follow the rules? Find out by getting your hands on a copy of this cozy page-turner from Brooke Skie!
