Darrell Kinsey is an accomplished published author.
He is known for being the author of Natch, released from University of Iowa press. He has also released short fiction in NOON and is the winner of a Pushcart Prize for Fiction XLV.
His authorship of Natch led to Darrell receiving The Center for Fiction 2025 First Novel Prize. This award was announced at The Center for Fiction Annual Awards Benefit at Cipriani 25 Broadway. Kinsey was presented with the award by Joseph Earl Thomas, and the award was also accompanied by a prize of $15,000.
Today he resides in Watkinsville, Georgia.
His book Natch is the tale of a young man from the north Georgian foothills who starts working for himself, climbing trees and cutting them down. He can work as he wants to and thinks that he is fine with his life the way that it is– living alone in a hunting cabin, working through his vices, and living like a wild man. When he meets a convenience store clerk named Asha, the novel goes over their brief relationship, existence, and attempt to begin a family together.
The inspiration for this work came from the author’s house, which is surrounded by hardwoods that occasionally require attention. He was frequently inspired by the characters who would be likely to show up and do the work and wanted this book to feel like one of the stories that the fellows would get distracted by and tell in the driveway while coming to the house to do the work, a story that came out of nowhere when the topic moved away from the trees.
Kinsey describes himself as being an unusual reader, saying that he likes to read the same passages or books over and over again, using it was a way to find inspiration for his current project. While the author was working on Natch, he says that his inspiration would come from works written by Cormac McCarthy and Hemingway. At the moment, the author is caught up in novels by Faulkner and Michael Ondaatje.
He says that his writing process ‘is a slow one’. He describes writing for an hour in the morning ‘in an official way’. Lots of the work that he does happens at other times, or when he is walking or running. Kinsey relays that certain passages or paragraphs will appear in his mind and he will have to pause what he is busy doing and capture them.

Natch is a 2025 novel by Darrell Kinsey. This book was the winner of The Center for Fiction 2025 First Novel Prize. If you have been wanting to read something new and you don’t know where to start, check out this book and see what you think.
Natch is twenty-nine years old and he is having a tough time attempting to get along with the members of his crew. He’s also having a tough time being patient with them doing all of the work and the money going to benefit someone else. No longer content to deal with it all, Natch starts working for himself and begins going into the foothills of north Georgia to climb trees and cut them down.
Natch thinks that he has finally found a way to get away from the hustle and grind and just work for himself, and pocket more cash for himself in the process. He has his ropes, truck, climbing gear, and a selection of saws that he purchases second-hand from various pawn shops and flea markets. Natch can work as much or as little as he pleases and no longer has to stick to a schedule that is dictated to him.
He thinks as well that he’s just fine with his life. He’s got a home in a hunting cabin at the end of a dirt road and likes his own habits and vices. Natch is able to do whatever he likes, but will all of that change when he meets Asha?
Asha works at a convenience store during the night shift, and once he meets her he cannot get her out of his mind. He feels that he needs her in the type of way that he has never felt for anyone. She is interesting and funny, and has a passion for belly dancing and reading. She wants to put herself through school to be a therapist and help others while also curing herself of all that she went through as a child with her family.
When Asha finds out that she is pregnant, the couple has to evolve into something more steadfast. Asha finds that expecting a child over the seasons of her pregnancy means that she enjoys the liberty of their free existence while also wondering what type of world her child will come in to.
