When a young woman takes a job in a small town on the coast at an all girls boarding school to teach them English literature, it seems like a straight forward enough situation. But through this process, she’s going to have to try and get out of the trap that she is herself.
This is a debut novel that will make readers fall in love with Avigayl Sharp! As the narrator takes on the new position at the boarding school, things seem to be going well. But perhaps her own observations of her performance are subjective, in a sense.
She gives manic lectures that cover everything from Bleak House by Charles Dickens to the ‘generational legacy’ of the Holocaust. In her off time, she gets busy socializing with the locals of the town, which includes the male teacher whose job she ended up taking.
In her quest to figure out where her life went wrong, everyone she meets is implicated. The teacher promised herself that she would never go back to the hometown located in the center of the country, it turns out that the holiday season has sent her back into the range of her family.
While at a bar on a cold night on the 7th night of Chanukah, she meets someone that she knew while she was a teen that may or may not have violated her and ruined her life. As the present comes into contact with the past, it turns out that closure is nowhere around.
She can’t find it at her childhood home and she can’t find it at the bar. Even looking inside of her mind she cannot seem to locate it. Irreverent but interesting, serious but hopeful, this book introduces a conversation about trauma while dealing with the project of speaking your truth with the compulsion to repeat and the idea of whether we are able to be transformed by love and art at the end of the day. Read Offseason and share with a friend if you love it as much as other readers have and introduce others to a new author in Avigayl Sharp.
Sickness, Health: Stories is a collection by Avigayl Sharp. If you liked Offseason or enjoy story collections that have a humorous angle but are also slightly eccentric, then you’ll want to check this collection out.
These stories feature a variety of different people and scenarios. A girl who is 13 years old ends up falling for her dentist. A grown woman decides to go back home and once she does she finds that she is in the horrible situation of having to split a bedroom with her parent. Two friends end up getting in touch with each other again and go to visit their now disgraced teacher from high school.
The stories inside this collection comprise an interesting and unique world in a stylish, mischievous and original way that fiction fans will not want to miss. A world that is familiar is turned inside out across the breadth of these eleven stories as we go along with characters who want love and approval, but want them so badly that they get tethered even further from what appears to be real life.
Constrained by the body and mind and attuned to the twenty-first century and all that it has to offer, they have to deal with arrested development and physical ailments as they have to go back to the place where they were undone and where they might be able to get a peek at how they are saved.
Check out Sickness, Health by Avigayl Sharp to follow along with every word of these stories and experience this ‘existential missive’ from a world that is deeply unwell and hopes to find the cure for the soul rot that is affecting all of us.
