Alex Finlay

Alex Finlay is the penname of an Alabama-born writer who is currently a resident of Washington, D.C. His decision to use the aforementioned penname rose from his desire to write fearlessly, and his neither optimism nor pessimism cornering the negative or positive reception of his book. He is represented by Lisa Erbach Vance of the Aaron M. Priest Literary Agency.

During his childhood, Finlay sought solace from films as a result of his family’s constant relocations. Consequently, personalities that influenced Alex Finlay include film director Christopher Edward Nolan, filmmaker Manoj Nelliyattu Shyamalan, and screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie. Another inspiration is his findings concerning forced confessions, partially involving youthful suspects. Finlay has had a pro-justice stance since he was a child, which is reflected in his characters’ persistent quests for justice for the victimized characters, particularly through the usage of a law enforcement agency such as the FBI.

Finlay is a widely-traveled writer, thanks to his childhood exotic tourism that has greatly influenced his literary work. For instance, he acknowledges the influence of his Mexican vacation on his novel Every Last Fear. Alex Finlay specializes in literary fiction, particularly the suspense, psychological realism and thriller subgenres.

Alex Finlay’s Literary Work

Alex Finlay’s first book is titled Every Last Fear, which is titled after the protagonist’s desire to overcome his fears in his family-related homicide investigation. It has 10+ editions. The first edition of the book—a 368-page hardcover—was initially published in March 2021 by Minotaur Books, which has also published the 320-page ebook edition, the 368-page Kindle edition, and a 362-page paperback edition. Minotaur Books has published another 400-page paperback edition, which was released in November 2021.

The inspiration for writing Every Last Fear came from a storytelling lesson that English author Neil Gaiman offered on the website MasterClass; in his January 2019 virtual classes, Gaiman challenged his learners to combine their imaginations with their life experiences. Prompted, Finlay imagined the eventual lives of the characters in a Netflix crime film that he had seen; he combined his imagination with a media report concerning the numerous deaths of Americans touring Mexico.

Book’s Plot: the protagonist in the Every Last Fear is a young man named Matt Pine who is an undergraduate film student at the New York University. The book is precisely set in a Mexican region called Tulsa—Finlay actually vacationed there—where Matt’s four family members die. Victims: Liv (mother), Evan (social justice activist father), Maggie (teenage sister), and Tommy (baby brother).

Security agencies have conflicting opinions. However, Matt suspects the involvement of the only surviving family member, his firstborn brother Danny, who has since been imprisoned for a documented love crime. Life threats, organized crime, and a misleading Mexican government are among the problems faced by Matt who must defy fear to unravel the multiple homicide.

I liked this book but don’t like not knowing authors real name. Wonder if it is a common author and he doesn’t want you to know. ie. James Patterson.

Finlay’s real name is Anthony Franze. He has written several books under his real name, most of which are in the vein of Scott Turow and John Grisham. He is a critically acclaimed thriller writer, and prominent Washington, DC lawyer.
