The Adults is an early fictional novel from Alison Espach. If you are a fan of coming of age stories or anything new in fiction that keeps you entertained and reading until the end, check this book out!

The Adults is its own story, the tale of the main character, a teen named Emily. It is told in the first person and tells how when she was fourteen years old she went to the fiftieth birthday party of her father. It was held in their home, a gorgeous estate in a nice neighborhood in Connecticut.

The story develops more to cover over ten years and takes place in different continents. Emily’s voice and her sight tell the reader more about the way that she sees adults. By hitting different turning points that overcome the separation of her parents, her father’s decision to relocate and move to Prague, a neighbor’s unfortunate suicide, the pregnancy of the mother of a friend which may or may not have been caused by Emily’s father, this book shows just how much is going on in Emily’s life.

Even though time goes on, Emily thinks that she might be contending with an inner disorder that gets in the way of herself really being able to see herself defined as an adult. It could be her imagination or it could be a good indicator that she is very aware that something is going on here.

This is an all new voice in fiction at the time of this publishing, and Alison Espach has crafted a very interesting story for everyone to read. She is able to blend seamlessly the memories of the past for this character and the present, giving us the perspective of what it is like to be this young woman and the challenge of having to grow up in the type of world where children and adults can be tough to distinguish between and sometimes can have behaviors that are much older or younger than their years.

Read this incredible debut for this author and keep an eye out for The Adults to be adapted into a feature length story for the screen!

Sally Holt was spending the summer before eighth grade started hanging out. Not too much was going on and there was just nothing to break up what had been a pretty idyllic summer. She went on family trips to enjoy the beach and spent a lot of time at the local pool during the after noon with her older sister, where she and Kathy would look at Billy Barnes, the boy working the concession stand.

Billy was not only cute and good at basketball, he was a senior who had always intrigued the sisters in a strange type of way. Billy has been even more interesting to them ever since he decided in fifth grade that he was going to jump off of the school roof.

The way that they are fascinated with him is something that the sisters are able to share when there are so many things that are different about her. By the time the summer has come to a conclusion, Kathy and Billy are together in some type of way.

But the ways that they are together may end up being marred by a strange stroke of luck that somehow leads to a horrible tragedy. This story takes place over the course of fifteen long years and is told from the point of view of Sally, as she talks to her sister in the times when she was alive and those after.

The disappearance of Kathy’s presence from the mortal plane makes a hole that is so huge that only Billy can really understand it. Now the basketball star is finally off-limits too to Sally as he is the mourning boyfriend of her sister forever.

Going over the years and capturing a love story between two people who are broken but have been drawn together by fate, this is a coming of age story that shows the many ways that the people that we care about the most can still have an impact on our lives when they are gone.

Thoughtful and provocative, observant and searingly emotional, pick up a copy of this story for yourself to see how things start and end for these three characters as they come of age in their lives and see just what a beautiful story Alison Espach has woven for readers!
