Clark and Charlotte may appear to have boring exterior lives that are totally ordinary. Clark works at the high school as a guidance counselor and Charlotte works as a bookkeeper. Their interior lives, however, are often as bold and complex as an abstract painting that are colored by imagined possibilities, childhood joys, and deeply buried fears.
Then an unexpected event happens when Clark rescues a young boy from drowning. From there, a chain of events is set into motion, some harrowing and some comic. Along the way, the fault lines are revealed of the couple’s marriage as well as their individual psyches.

This is the story of a young social worker who is idealistic and is continually drawn into the lives of his clients, who are mentally ill. Charlie Shade was born into a prosperous life that was quiet but he has always had a sense of injustice bothering him.
While he has a very comfortable existence, he feels that it is his destiny to leave his life of bread and laundry behind so that he can work with people in crisis. On the way, he meets a soulful young woman named Alice in whom he ends up finding a kindred spirit who is living helplessly by laws of childhood superstition.
Charlie has a lot of empathy for his clients, which sometimes is admirable but other times gets him into trouble. These include people who are troubled souls such as Hal, a high school wrestling champion who has undergone a psychotic break as well as Opal, an isolated young woman who claims that different philosophies have confused her life.
Charlie is not only a social worker but a husband and a brand new father. But he finds himself risking his own private domestic world which he cherishes in order to help Opal, Hal and others move beyond the inner worlds they live in which are haunted into a larger world of connection and love.
A collision of characters that come together, The Folded World takes on the universal dilemma of love, where giving to another can sometimes seem like it is the death of the world of oneself. Amity Gaige takes her trained eye to a unique world that focuses on the devastating and joyful aspects of life and once again reminds the reader of the depths and the pleasure that can be found in her fictional work.
