Andre Dubus is a published, award-winning author.
He was born 1936 and passed away in 1999. He has been referred to as one of the best American short story writers to emerge from the 20th century. His short fiction collections extend to the 1975 work Separate Flights, the 1977 book Adultery & Other Choices, and the 1996 work Dancing After Hours, which ended up going on to be a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist.
A different collection by this author was titled Finding a Girl in America. It features the story “Killings”. The story would be adapted into the 2001 film In the Bedroom, a movie that featured Marisa Tomei, Sissy Spacek, and Tom Wilkinson. He is not the only person in his family to be a writer; his son Andre Dubus III also writes.
Dubus is frequently compared to the famous author Anton Chekhov. He is also reversed as being a ‘writer’s writer’.
The Colonel’s Wife is a 2015 book by Andre Dubus. If you have been searching for a short story that is not going to take up too much of your time but is still something that is good, check out this short story and see what you think of it with this eBook short that was a selection for Vintage Shorts’ ‘Short Story Month’.
The colonel had managed to serve in two different wars without the Marines and had yet to be injured. But later when he is at home, he finds that he has the unfortunate incident of having fallen off of a horse and having broken both of his legs in the process. He ends up finding out that his knees are never going to recover all the way again. Along with his wife, he’s going to have to relearn everything that he knows and take it on all over again.
This is the important story of a man and his wife. She is the woman that he felt that when he met her for the first time that he was able to look at the sun ‘without burning his eyes’. This is an interesting story of peace taking place after the war and incorporates the drama that comes along with real life. This is a fascinating story that comes from the collection and the New York Times’ Notable Book Dancing After Hours. Check it out to see what you think and to get a sample of how Dubus is as a writer!
We Don’t Live Here Anymore is a 2018 collection of short stories and novellas by Andre Dubus. Check out one of the authors that the New York Times has deemed to be ‘one of the 20th century’s most gifted short story writers’. His first book of stories came out in 1975 and Separate Flights was celebrated immediately as being the arrival of a new voice in American fiction and one that was important! Not even two years later would come along the book Adultery and Other Choices, where Dubus would see an even bigger increase in his reputation.
Both of these books have been collected in We Don’t Live Here Anymore, which is the first in a three volume Collected Short Stories and Novellas by Andre Dubus. They are stories revolving around people who ‘must make accommodations once they find out there’s no winning’, as Ann Beattie has written in her introduction.
The stories do end up focusing on youth and its fragile nature. Meanwhile, some of the later stories end up shifting to adulthood and darker struggles, including as with “Andromache”. This was the author’s first story that was featured in The New Yorker, which goes along with the aftermath of a death during wartime. If you want something new and love interesting and unique stories, this is a book by Andre Dubus that you can’t miss. Check it out and see what you think!
