Heaven is the first book in the Heaven Trilogy by Angela Johnson. This is a young adult novel that touches on topics such as self-discovery, deception, and knowing what you should do when the truth is at hand.
You just never know what is going to come down for you when you are living in heaven. This is something that Marley knows for herself and has since she was two years old. That’s how old she was when her mother discovered a postcard that was postmarked for Heaven, Ohio on a park bench and made the decision that this was the place that she wanted to raise her family.
For twelve entire years, the hometown that she enjoyed lived up to its name. She resides in a house that is located by the river, has loving parents that she really enjoys, good friends, a younger brother who is funny, and likes to get frequent letters from her Uncle Jack, who is very mysterious.
Before this, Marley knew a lot of things. She knew that she has the same hands as her mother and the same love of ice cream that her father enjoys. She likes that her brother isn’t annoying and that her Uncle Jack is mysterious. But she doesn’t know the truth.
When a letter comes from Alabama, Marley’s life suddenly gets turned upside down. She doesn’t know who she is anymore. She doesn’t know where she is able to go for the answers, and doesn’t know what she should do when she feels she has been betrayed by the people she thought she could trust.
When the truth arrives with the rain on one stormy afternoon in summer, everything is changed. Her parents are now liars in her eyes, her brother is a stranger to her, and her uncle is a larger mystery that she doesn’t quite understand. Can Marley see that change has come to her and that’s good, or will she regret the day that she ever found it out? Read this debut in the series to find out!
The First Part Last is the second book in the Heaven Trilogy by Angela Johnson. If you thought that the first book in this series was engaging, keep things going by reading the sequel in this series.
Bobby is your average urban teen young man. He is often restless, and frequently impulsive. However, the one thing that stands out about him and makes him different from others is the fact that he is going to be a father.
His girlfriend Nia is pregnant and they are about to find out that their lives have changed forever. Now in place of spending time with their friends, they will be hanging out with doctors and then spending their time drowning in diapers.
They have options now. They can keep the baby or give it up for adoption. They want to ultimately do the right thing, but that’s difficult when they aren’t sure what the right thing to do is. Will they figure it out if they put their mind to it or is this a case where they will feel guilty no matter what they do? Read this book from Angela Johnson to find out!
