She attended the University of Virginia before going on to earn her MFA in Fiction at New York University in 2014. The village of Koprivici faces its own string of hardships, with very few babies surviving past infancy. The people there have decided an orphan girl named Anka is the cause of their troubles. As Anka gets older, the village Captain plans to force her into marriage.

Everything shifts when Yana arrives and meets Anka. The two come up with a plan to create a monster so frightening that Anka might slip away in the chaos. The idea quickly grows beyond what they expected.

This book drops readers straight into nineteenth-century Bulgaria with a story that feels fresh and original.
