Growing up, Austin Channing Brown was born on October 6, 1984. At age ten, her parents separated, so she lived with her father and spent summers with her mother in a mostly Black neighborhood in Cleveland, Ohio.

In her early school years, she attended a mostly white elementary school where she often felt erased and discounted. Later, she moved to a Catholic high school for a different learning environment. She went on to North Park University, a Christian school, and earned a Bachelor of Arts in business management. After that, she got a Master of Arts in social justice from Marygrove College, another Catholic university.
