Banana Yoshimoto is a published author. It is also the pen name used by Mahoko Yoshimoto. She is a contemporary Japanese author who is known for having the famous father, the poet Takaaki Yoshimoto.

In addition to this, Haruno Yoiko is the author’s sister and is well known in Japan as a cartoonist. She grew up in a family that identified as liberal and as such was able to learn the value of being independent from a young age.

Banana attended the Art College at Nihon University, majoring in literature there. It was during this time that she took on the name ‘Banana’ thanks to the fond feelings that she has for banana flowers. She says the name is cute as well as being ‘purposefully androgynous’.

Even though she has been very successful as an author, Yoshimoto is obscure and down to earth. Going out in public often means that she is seen without makeup, choosing to dress simply. Like many other public figures and artists she is guarded about her personal life.

She does not often say much about her certified Rolfing practitioner Hiroyoshi Tahata or her son, who was born in 2003. Banana instead chooses to focus on speaking about her writing. She also writes at the computer every day for half an hour, saying that she sometimes feels guilty because she is writing the stories ‘almost for fun’.

Yoshimoto has received a great deal of recognition as well as awards for her writing. These include the 6th Haiyan New Literature Award, the 16th Kyoka Izumi Literary Award, the 39th Minister of Education Newcomer Award for Arts selection (for “Kitchen” and “Utakata/Sanctuary”), the 2nd Yamamoto Shugoro Award, the Italian Scanno Prize, the 5th Murasaki Shikibu Literature Award, the Italian Fendicime Literary Award, the Italian Masquera Dargento Prize for Literature, the 10th Dumago Literary Prize, and the Italian Capri Prize.

Her writing has been translated so that readers from over thirty countries all over the world can enjoy it.
