Bethany Baptiste is a published American author.

Main character Venus Stoneheart is a woman how is dealing in potions. She lives in a country that has strong feelings and the witchers and the humans are divided. It is in this climate that she brews up her own love potions to help support her family– love potions that are definitely illegal.

She’s risking quite a bit making up her own love potions. It can often be quite dangerous. Choosing to brew often comes with side effects that can be debilitating and painful. Getting caught making them translates to death or a sentence in prison. But that is not what Venus is scared of.

Venus is terrified because she is aware that there is a sentient magic inside of her that is dark too. When an iron bullet from an enemy ends up killing off her mother, her entire life ends up imploding. She knows that her main duty is to keep Janus, her little sister with a penchant for being reckless, safe and protected. This was something that her mother did but now the responsibility falls to her.

Things have changed drastically for Venus virtually overnight. The Grand Witcher is the head of her coven and has their own access to power. They offer Venus the opportunity to find her mother’s killer and have them punished. However, she is going to have to pay quite a bit to get her revenge.

The cost being asked in exchange for this by the Grand Witcher is to brew up some poison potions for the purpose of enslaving some of the most powerful and influential politicians in D.C.

Venus is not certain whether she should do this, but the temptation to find her mother’s killer is too great. As she goes further into the city and crawls deeper into its corrupt underbelly, the line between what is power and what is magic is starting to blur.
