Betty Liu
Betty Liu is a journalist, author, anchor, and executive. She was born in Hong Kong in the year 1973, and moved to the United States when she was three years old. From the age of twelve was raised in Philadelphia, and she attended Central High School. In the year 1995, she graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania with an English degree.
Betty began her career in financial journalism as a Hong Kong based regional correspondent and was the youngest Taiwan Bureau Chief for Dow Jones Newswires.
After leaving Dow Jones, she worked for many years as the Atlanta Bureau Chief for the Financial Times, where she broke some stories on top political and corporate leaders like ex-US President Jimmy Carter, Coca-Cola ex-chief executive Douglas Daft, ex-Home Depot CEO Bob Nardelli.
When she went back to Asia as a correspondent and anchor for CNBC Asia, Liu covered the daily market action in the Greater China region for all of CNBC’s morning shows, which includes CNBC’s Squawk Box.
Along the way, she has also written pieces for Far Eastern Economic Review, Philadelphia Magazine, and The Wall Street Journal. She has also written about personal finance as an author. She published a lifestyle and financial guide, “Age Smart: Discovering the Fountain of Youth at Midlife and Beyond”. Which was later turned into a month long weekly series on CNBC Asia which was titled “The Good Life”. This book led her to penning a bi-weekly personal finance column in The South China Morning Post.
From 2007 until 2018, she worked for Bloomberg Television, formerly anchoring “In the Loop with Betty Liu” starting from the show’s inception in 2007 until it got canceled in 2015. The show later got replaced by “Market Movers”, before she anchored a morning program called “Daybreak Asia” out of NYC and was an Editor-at Large at Bloomberg. On Bloomberg Radio, she hosted “In the Loop, At the Half”.
In the year 2017, she founded RadiateInc.com, which is a subscription website that offers business micro lessons from top CEOs. That same year, she became High Point University’s Media entrepreneur in Residence.
In the year 1997, she got a Dow Jones Newswires Award for covering the Asian financial crisis. She earned a spot on TJFR’s “Top 30 business journalists under 30” list from 2000 to 2002 for her coverage while at FT of the largest Fortune 500 companies based in the South (FedEx, Coca-Cola, Home Depot, and UPS). In the year 2011, she became the first Asian and female student to get inducted into Central High School’s Alumni Hall of Fame.
She has been married twice, once to Benjamin L. Walter (a neurologist and a Central High graduate) that she married on September 14, 2002 and divorced in 2006, with whom she has twin sons (Dylan and Zachary) who were born July 21, 2004. And again to William Browning, whom she met in Hong Kong and is an Australian news executive. The couple divorced in the year 2012.
Betty speaks a bit of Cantonese and is fluent in Mandarin.
The scariest thing that she has ever done is scuba dive off of the coast of Sumba with her sons despite being a horrible swimmer. Once she got down to the bottom, it was truly beautiful.
